Machinery and Equipment
Machine monitoring with IoT records the vibration, temperature, current draw and operating states of machinery and equipment. Operators detect damage and the causes of downtime early, maintain by condition and make the energy consumption of individual machines visible.

3D printer
An industrial 3D printer must coordinate many axes precisely while staying connected to IT systems and CAD data. A shared network for control and IT makes additive manufacturing faster and the machine simpler.
Adhesive application machine

Agricultural machine
Air conditioning system
Commercial air conditioning systems in offices, retail branches and data centres can be monitored remotely with IoT. Operators see energy consumption, temperatures and faults in one place, detect failing compressors or refrigerant shortages early and plan service visits precisely.
Assembly line
Shop floor management software shows the cycle, status, faults and key figures of every assembly line workstation in real time on screens and andon boards. Teams respond faster to deviations, and assembly documentation moves from paper to screen.
Bioreactor
A bioreactor control system based on IoT regulates light, water temperature, pumps and feeding using live readings. Operators monitor and optimise the system remotely and step in only when problems arise.
Blow moulding machine
Blower
An aeration blower in a wastewater treatment plant can be monitored continuously with IoT: sensors record vibration, pressures, intake temperatures and energy consumption. Operators detect bearing damage and excess consumption early and need to visit remote plants less often.

Machine monitoring: track condition, downtime and energy
Most examples concern pumps, electric motors, packaging machines and compressors, followed by refrigeration and air conditioning systems, injection moulding machines and machine tools. On motors, sensors measure vibration, imbalance and the condition of rolling bearings, and on large drives also electrical power and temperature. On compressors, a current transformer shows how long the machine runs under load or idle. On packaging lines, retrofit modules from in.hub automatically assign current and process data to the states production, idle and downtime, and on injection moulding machines they record temperature profiles and cycle times. Older refrigeration systems are connected via Modbus gateways without changing the control system. Data travels via IO-Link, MQTT or OPC UA into platforms such as ifm moneo, SIDRIVE IQ or Microsoft Azure.
The examples come from automotive, consumer goods, chemicals and mechanical engineering, usually as condition monitoring, energy monitoring or tracking utilisation and downtime. With ifm, Magna monitors motors, pumps and ventilation units in its paint shops, and the pilot is becoming the group benchmark. Rohrdorfer Zement relies on condition monitoring from Innomotics for its heavily loaded drives, with data sent via a gateway to the SIDRIVE IQ cloud platform. A manufacturer of beverage and food packaging used in.hub to cut unplanned downtime on six lines by 15 percent.
Machine monitoring: frequently asked questions
How does an IoT machine monitoring system work?
Sensors on the machine continuously measure variables such as vibration, temperature or current draw, and a diagnostic system evaluates them on site and transmits them to a platform. Limit values are stored there. At Magna, technicians and managers receive an alarm on their smartphone or by email as soon as a value is exceeded. A dashboard shows time series and the overall condition as a traffic light.
Can older machines be retrofitted for monitoring?
Yes, older machines can be retrofitted without changing their control system. Balluff's Condition Monitoring Toolkit connects up to four IO-Link sensors for temperature, vibration and pressure and works independently of the cloud and the machine control. Climate Energy brought its refrigeration systems online within a few days using gateways from Visualys that connect existing Modbus devices. in.hub retrofitted twelve injection moulding machines with the HUB-EN200.
How does machine downtime tracking improve OEE?
Machine downtime tracking records stoppages automatically instead of on paper and makes their causes comparable across lines. A manufacturer of beverage and food packaging had in.hub classify current and process data on six lines into production, idle and downtime. The result: 15 percent fewer unplanned stoppages, 220 hours of additional production time and an annual benefit of more than 18,000 euros. The investment of 5,900 euros paid for itself after four months.
How does machine condition monitoring enable predictive maintenance?
Machine condition monitoring enables predictive maintenance by basing the service date on actual load rather than fixed intervals. On compressors, ifm uses a current transformer to measure how long they run under load and idle, because the compressor only wears during load operation. The moneo platform counts the operating hours for each operating range. This allows maintenance to be planned as needed, before creeping damage leads to unplanned downtime.
