Manure removal system
A manure removal system in a livestock barn can be monitored and serviced remotely with IoT. If it fails, the technician sees the cause in the portal instead of driving to the farm for hours.

Remote access to a manure removal system
In the solution example, IXON IXrouters are installed in the HKS control units and PV communication cabinets. They provide secure remote access via a VPN tunnel and clear network separation, without certificates having to be sent out. The web-based customer portal built on IXON Cloud integrates existing visualisations and local web interfaces through port forwarding. Operators view and control their systems via app or browser, and technicians access them through the same platform. A router is preconfigured via USB stick in around five minutes, whereas VPN configuration used to take about 30 minutes.
The example comes from mechanical engineering and agriculture. Rudolf Hörmann GmbH & Co. KG supplies barn, hall and control systems for farms and has built the HÖRMANN Portal and the “Rudolf Hörmann” app with IXON. The company installs 60 to 100 IXrouters a year, plus around 80 for migrating existing customers. If, for instance, a wide scraper system stops because a motor protection switch has tripped, a quick look at the portal is now enough. This cuts costs and shortens response times. According to Sebastian Huber, no IXrouter in the field has failed since the cooperation began.
Manure removal systems: frequently asked questions
How can an alley scraper system be diagnosed remotely?
Via a router in the barn control system that opens secure remote access to the equipment. At Hörmann, IXrouters are built into the HKS control units. If a wide scraper system stops because a motor protection switch has tripped, the technician sees it in the HÖRMANN Portal. Such a case often used to mean hours of travel; today many typical service cases can be solved remotely.
Can farmers control their manure scrapers via an app?
Yes, operators can view and control their systems via app or browser. For this, Hörmann offers the “Rudolf Hörmann” app, which is based on IXON and provides operator views for the HKS control units. Technicians use the same app to gain access through a secure VPN tunnel. Previously there was no mobile customer access, and ease of use was limited.
What changes for the manufacturer with remote access to barn systems?
Commissioning, administration and service become much faster and simpler. Hörmann replaced a decentralised set-up of routers and its own servers that required a lot of effort for router and certificate management. Today, a USB stick is enough to preconfigure a router in a few minutes. Many customer briefings and security arrangements are no longer needed, and a central platform replaces local server landscapes.
How secure is remote access to the control system of a manure removal system?
Remote access runs through secure tunnels with clear network separation and central management. At Hörmann, the IXrouters replaced older VPN and OpenVPN structures that no longer met today's security requirements. Sensitive certificates no longer have to be sent out. The company thus meets current IoT security guidelines and can still diagnose a tripped motor protection switch remotely.

Pump
Pump monitoring with IoT records vibration, temperature, pressure and energy consumption of running pumps. Operators detect damage and faults before a pump fails and plan maintenance by condition rather than at fixed intervals.
Compressor
With IoT, compressor maintenance follows actual condition: sensors record current consumption, pressure, temperature and running times. Operators detect creeping damage and unused running time early and cut energy and service costs.
Electric motor
Motor condition monitoring with IoT continuously measures the vibration, temperature and current draw of electric motors. Operators detect imbalance, bearing damage or winding faults early and replace motors based on condition rather than after a failure.
Packaging machine
OEE software automatically records run times, downtime, speed and rejects on packaging machines from the machine signals. Operators see where their lines lose performance, and machine builders use the same data for remote access and digital services.
Refrigeration system
A refrigeration monitoring system makes service plannable: temperatures, refrigerant circuit pressures, compressor status and energy consumption flow into a platform in real time. Operators and service partners detect faults early, avoid unnecessary site visits and reduce excess consumption.
Air conditioning system
Commercial air conditioning systems in offices, retail branches and data centres can be monitored remotely with IoT. Operators see energy consumption, temperatures and faults in one place, detect failing compressors or refrigerant shortages early and plan service visits precisely.
