Packaging machine
OEE software automatically records run times, downtime, speed and rejects on packaging machines from the machine signals. Operators see where their lines lose performance, and machine builders use the same data for remote access and digital services.

OEE software for packaging machines: making downtime visible
In the solution examples, the ZentNodeOEE adapter from Zentinel captures production speed, good and defective units, and run and stop times without any intervention in the machine control system. An edge server stores the values, and Single Pair Ethernet and MQTT carry them to dashboards. The HUB-EN200 from in.hub automatically classifies power and process data into the states production, idle and standstill and passes them on to the ERP system. Niverplast connects its controllers via OPC UA or Modbus and IXON routers to the AWS cloud, while MULTIVAC and Tetra Pak use Microsoft Azure. On the machine itself, igus uses its CF.Q system to monitor the cables in the cable carrier for incipient core breaks.
Most examples come from the food and consumer goods industry and from machine builders, typically for OEE tracking, downtime analysis and digital services. A manufacturer of beverage and food packaging uses in.hub to record the status of six lines and has achieved 15% fewer unplanned stoppages and 220 hours of additional production time. Niverplast collects the data from more than 150 IXON routers in its bag-in-box machines in the AWS cloud. At GHD Hartmann, the igus cable monitoring is an integral part of the GBK 440 packaging machine and significantly extends maintenance intervals.

OEE software for packaging machines: frequently asked questions
How is OEE calculated for a packaging line?
OEE is the product of availability, performance and quality, expressed as a percentage. Availability shows how long the machine actually produces, performance whether it maintains its optimum speed, and quality the share of defect-free units. A value of 100 percent means production without interruption, at maximum speed and without defects. At a chocolate manufacturer, the solution from Perinet and Zentinel records the required values automatically on the packaging lines.
How can downtime on packaging lines be tracked automatically?
A device on the line records power and process data and automatically assigns it to the states production, idle and standstill. A manufacturer of beverage and food packaging had previously documented stoppages by hand, which made systematic root cause analysis almost impossible. With the in.hub HUB-EN200 on six lines, unplanned stoppages fell by 15%. The investment of EUR 5,900 paid for itself within four months.
How does secure remote monitoring of packaging machines work?
Remote monitoring is secure when an industrial router with a built-in firewall connects the machine to the cloud over an encrypted link. Niverplast, a manufacturer of bag-in-box machines, had its own remote access solution, which customers rejected because its security was not certified. Today, IXON routers connect the controllers via OPC UA or Modbus and send the data to the AWS cloud via MQTT. Customers get protected access to a portal with different user rights.
What smart services do packaging machine manufacturers offer?
Typical services are configuration assistants, customer portals with key figures and remote access for service. MULTIVAC developed the Pack Pilot with diva-e: instead of entering technical parameters, the operator selects the product and the upper and lower film, and the rule set in the Microsoft Azure cloud supplies the finished machine settings. In the myMULTIVAC portal, customers see availability and bottlenecks. Changeover times are shorter, and service responds much faster thanks to remote access to the data.

Pump
Pump monitoring with IoT records vibration, temperature, pressure and energy consumption of running pumps. Operators detect damage and faults before a pump fails and plan maintenance by condition rather than at fixed intervals.
Compressor
With IoT, compressor maintenance follows actual condition: sensors record current consumption, pressure, temperature and running times. Operators detect creeping damage and unused running time early and cut energy and service costs.
Electric motor
Motor condition monitoring with IoT continuously measures the vibration, temperature and current draw of electric motors. Operators detect imbalance, bearing damage or winding faults early and replace motors based on condition rather than after a failure.
Refrigeration system
A refrigeration monitoring system makes service plannable: temperatures, refrigerant circuit pressures, compressor status and energy consumption flow into a platform in real time. Operators and service partners detect faults early, avoid unnecessary site visits and reduce excess consumption.
Air conditioning system
Commercial air conditioning systems in offices, retail branches and data centres can be monitored remotely with IoT. Operators see energy consumption, temperatures and faults in one place, detect failing compressors or refrigerant shortages early and plan service visits precisely.
Injection moulding machine
A connected injection moulding machine continuously supplies data on mould cooling, cycle time, electricity and compressed air. Plastics processors use it to cut energy use and scrap, detect faults earlier and bring machines from different makers onto one data basis.
