Test bench

With test bench automation and IoT, a connected test bench captures test values, throughput and machine status automatically and makes them available in real time. Manufacturers document tests completely, fix faults via remote access and save on-site service visits.

Test bench automation with IoT: capture data, maintain remotely

ALPS Inspection uses an HMI platform from EXOR for this: the JSmart industrial tablet with Wi-Fi, Power over Ethernet and IP67 protection is mounted directly on the machine. The JMobile software includes an OPC UA server and client as well as an MQTT publisher, collects the data and generates a twelve-page diagnostic report as a PDF. Via the Corvina Cloud IoT platform, technicians can access the machines from anywhere. ITK Engineering develops test bench software with user and variant management, test sequencing, event logging and measurement data storage that works with industrial PCs and industrial measurement technology.

The examples come from mechanical engineering and the automotive industry. ALPS Inspection's machines carry out non-destructive leak tests on plastic containers, for example for the chemical and food industries, and the company has thousands of systems in use worldwide. Remote diagnostics make many on-site service visits unnecessary; podcast episode #153 covers the project in more detail. ITK Engineering, part of the Bosch Group, builds development and production test benches, for example for end-of-line tests of intelligent actuators and sensors. For one customer, 25 existing machines were retrofitted with laser sensors for camera- and measurement-based final inspection.

Test bench automation: frequently asked questions

How does IoT support a leak test bench for plastic containers?

IoT captures test values, production counts and throughput automatically and makes them usable in real time. ALPS Inspection tests plastic containers such as detergent bottles or chemical containers for leaks directly in the production line. Previously, test values were not prepared in a structured way. Today, the HMI displays machine processes graphically in real time, so customers can optimise test and production settings in a targeted way and identify weak points.

What does a test bench for end-of-line testing need to deliver?

It must test robustly, quickly and reproducibly in the final production step. For end-of-line tests of intelligent actuators, ITK Engineering developed modular software that covers test configuration, variant diversity and automated error handling. This reduced downtime and increased equipment availability. For testing intelligent sensors to ISO 26262, a platform software was created that can be extended with plug-ins for new sensor types.

What test bench software is needed for diagnostics and remote access?

HMI software that collects data at the machine, generates reports and enables remote access. At ALPS Inspection, the JMobile software runs on the EXOR JSmart tablet; it captures the data, displays it graphically and generates a twelve-page diagnostic report as a PDF. Via the Corvina Cloud or a hotspot, technicians access the machines remotely and analyse faults instead of travelling to site. Customers benefit from less downtime and lower service costs.

What does test bench data acquisition software need to cover?

Alongside measurement and control technology, above all software that manages test sequences, variants and data. ITK Engineering's platform software for sensor testing includes user administration, configuration and variant management, hardware abstraction, test sequencing, event logging and measurement data storage. It works with standard hardware, industrial PCs and industrial measurement technology and maintains the test standard across plants distributed worldwide.

Pump

Pump

Pump monitoring with IoT records vibration, temperature, pressure and energy consumption of running pumps. Operators detect damage and faults before a pump fails and plan maintenance by condition rather than at fixed intervals.

Compressor

Compressor

With IoT, compressor maintenance follows actual condition: sensors record current consumption, pressure, temperature and running times. Operators detect creeping damage and unused running time early and cut energy and service costs.

Electric motor

Electric motor

Motor condition monitoring with IoT continuously measures the vibration, temperature and current draw of electric motors. Operators detect imbalance, bearing damage or winding faults early and replace motors based on condition rather than after a failure.

Packaging machine

Packaging machine

OEE software automatically records run times, downtime, speed and rejects on packaging machines from the machine signals. Operators see where their lines lose performance, and machine builders use the same data for remote access and digital services.

Refrigeration system

Refrigeration system

A refrigeration monitoring system makes service plannable: temperatures, refrigerant circuit pressures, compressor status and energy consumption flow into a platform in real time. Operators and service partners detect faults early, avoid unnecessary site visits and reduce excess consumption.

Air conditioning system

Air conditioning system

Commercial air conditioning systems in offices, retail branches and data centres can be monitored remotely with IoT. Operators see energy consumption, temperatures and faults in one place, detect failing compressors or refrigerant shortages early and plan service visits precisely.
