Construction machine

Heavy equipment telematics transmits condition and operating data from every connected construction machine to manufacturers and dealers. They detect anomalies, recommend maintenance and install software updates remotely, without a technician having to travel.

Heavy equipment telematics: service and updates from afar

At Hitachi Construction Machinery, machine data is sent via cellular network to the Cumulocity industrial IoT platform. Through Global e-Service and ConSite Air, service engineers see machine condition, performance indicators and environmental impact in real time, and the OTA function delivers new software to a large number of machines in a short time. Regional data hosting and a cloud-agnostic architecture meet different data laws. A supplier of mobile working machines worked with Novatec Consulting to bring the data available locally on the machine’s CAN bus into an IoT platform. Configuration and parameter changes travel from the cloud to the machine, and the teams tested new features on hardware-in-the-loop set-ups and on the real machine.

The examples come from construction and mechanical engineering. Hitachi Construction Machinery can now offer consistent service even in regulated regions such as the Middle East, with less downtime and more efficient maintenance. Customers also gain transparency over their emissions data. At Novatec, building roles and skills in the customer’s team was as important as the technology, also with regulations such as the EU Data Act in mind; a key milestone was reached on schedule. In episode #30, Wirtgen shows how the Wirtgen Performance Tracker records milling depth, site progress and downtime of its cold milling machines.

Heavy equipment telematics: frequently asked questions

What does heavy equipment tracking deliver?

Tracking shows in real time where construction machines are, how heavily they are used and whether they are available. In episode #125 of the IoT Use Case Podcast, SCHIELICKE BAU from Beelitz explains how it worked with DeDeNet to integrate more than 100 digitally connected vehicles and construction machines into one system. An open system architecture and the partnership with Telekom take care of data transmission.

How does heavy equipment diagnostics change service for construction machines?

With IoT, technicians know before they set off which part needs replacing and which tools they will need. To make this possible, machines send and receive data that is combined with customer, order and production data, as in a project by a supplier of mobile working machines with Novatec Consulting. Hitachi Construction Machinery recommends maintenance measures remotely and installs software updates without site visits.

How can construction machinery maintenance be managed remotely?

Through an industrial IoT platform, service engineers see machine condition in real time and recommend maintenance before a technician sets off. At Hitachi Construction Machinery, machine data is sent via cellular network to Cumulocity and analysed to detect anomalies. The OTA function delivers new software to a large number of machines in a short time. The result is less downtime and more efficient maintenance, even in regulated regions such as the Middle East.

How is mobile machinery connected to an IoT platform?

Mobile machinery is connected via edge components that pass data from the machine’s CAN bus to an IoT platform. A supplier of mobile working machines implemented this with Novatec Consulting: the data available locally on the CAN bus is processed and displayed in the platform. In the other direction, configuration and parameter changes travel from the cloud to the machine. New features were tested on hardware-in-the-loop set-ups and on the real machine.

Pump

Pump

Pump monitoring with IoT records vibration, temperature, pressure and energy consumption of running pumps. Operators detect damage and faults before a pump fails and plan maintenance by condition rather than at fixed intervals.

Compressor

Compressor

With IoT, compressor maintenance follows actual condition: sensors record current consumption, pressure, temperature and running times. Operators detect creeping damage and unused running time early and cut energy and service costs.

Electric motor

Electric motor

Motor condition monitoring with IoT continuously measures the vibration, temperature and current draw of electric motors. Operators detect imbalance, bearing damage or winding faults early and replace motors based on condition rather than after a failure.

Packaging machine

Packaging machine

OEE software automatically records run times, downtime, speed and rejects on packaging machines from the machine signals. Operators see where their lines lose performance, and machine builders use the same data for remote access and digital services.

Refrigeration system

Refrigeration system

A refrigeration monitoring system makes service plannable: temperatures, refrigerant circuit pressures, compressor status and energy consumption flow into a platform in real time. Operators and service partners detect faults early, avoid unnecessary site visits and reduce excess consumption.

Air conditioning system

Air conditioning system

Commercial air conditioning systems in offices, retail branches and data centres can be monitored remotely with IoT. Operators see energy consumption, temperatures and faults in one place, detect failing compressors or refrigerant shortages early and plan service visits precisely.
