Drilling rig
In horizontal directional drilling, every connected drilling rig sends its machine, sensor and drilling data to the cloud. Operators use it to produce drilling reports, keep track of location and progress, and detect faults before downtime becomes expensive.

Horizontal directional drilling: connected drilling rigs
Tracto transfers telemetry data from its horizontal directional drilling rigs (HDD rigs) to the cloud via Microsoft Azure IoT Hub, where Azure Kubernetes Services and Azure SQL store and process it. A data buffer on the machine, implemented with Elastic’s Filebeat, absorbs connection drops and transmits the data as soon as the network is available again. The rigs also send operating states and error logs. On offshore drilling platforms, a battery-powered Asystom multisensor combines ultrasound, vibration and temperature and transmits the readings via LoRaWAN; after a learning phase of just a few days, AI evaluates them.
The examples come from construction, mechanical engineering and offshore drilling. Tracto creates the mandatory drilling reports in its BoreData application, plans bore paths with Quickplanner3D and shows in the COCKPIT where the machines are and how many drilling metres they have covered. Central cloud services, built with consileo, significantly reduced the platform’s operating costs. On a North Sea drilling platform, the Asystom system detected an anomaly on the main shaft of the top drive. The cause was broken disc springs, which were repaired during a planned drilling stop.

Horizontal directional drilling rigs: frequently asked questions
How is a digital drilling report created?
A digital drilling report is generated automatically from the data the drilling rig produces during drilling. At Tracto, telemetry data is sent to the cloud via Azure IoT Hub, and the BoreData application uses it to create the mandatory drilling reports. They are quickly and easily available to Tracto and, above all, to customers, without anyone having to transfer values by hand.
How can damage to the top drive of a drilling rig be detected early?
Top drive damage shows up early as rising ultrasound levels on the main shaft. On a North Sea drilling platform, an Asystom multisensor detected such an anomaly even though a visual inspection by offshore staff found nothing. Onshore analysis pointed to loose metal fragments, and when the unit was dismantled during a planned drilling stop, broken disc springs were found in the torque arm. A later failure was possibly prevented.
How can HDD drilling be controlled and tracked remotely?
Modern HDD rigs can be remotely controlled by tablet and follow a previously calculated drilling plan. Tracto calculates bore paths as 3D models with Quickplanner3D and sends the plan to the machine, which follows it without manual intervention by the drill operator. In the past, up to three additional people were needed on site. In the COCKPIT, Tracto and its customers see each machine’s location, daily working time and drilling metres covered.
How does connectivity reduce downtime on an HDD drilling rig?
Connectivity reduces downtime because faults become visible centrally and the service team can intervene remotely. The basis is central storage of all machine and condition data. Tracto collects all error messages in the cloud, which means service technicians can identify faults and weak points much faster. At the push of a button, customers can bring in Tracto’s service team, who then access the rig’s display remotely. As a next step, Tracto plans to contact customers before downtime occurs.

Pump
Pump monitoring with IoT records vibration, temperature, pressure and energy consumption of running pumps. Operators detect damage and faults before a pump fails and plan maintenance by condition rather than at fixed intervals.
Compressor
With IoT, compressor maintenance follows actual condition: sensors record current consumption, pressure, temperature and running times. Operators detect creeping damage and unused running time early and cut energy and service costs.
Electric motor
Motor condition monitoring with IoT continuously measures the vibration, temperature and current draw of electric motors. Operators detect imbalance, bearing damage or winding faults early and replace motors based on condition rather than after a failure.
Packaging machine
OEE software automatically records run times, downtime, speed and rejects on packaging machines from the machine signals. Operators see where their lines lose performance, and machine builders use the same data for remote access and digital services.
Refrigeration system
A refrigeration monitoring system makes service plannable: temperatures, refrigerant circuit pressures, compressor status and energy consumption flow into a platform in real time. Operators and service partners detect faults early, avoid unnecessary site visits and reduce excess consumption.
Air conditioning system
Commercial air conditioning systems in offices, retail branches and data centres can be monitored remotely with IoT. Operators see energy consumption, temperatures and faults in one place, detect failing compressors or refrigerant shortages early and plan service visits precisely.
