Monitoring industrial woodworking machinery via app

In the solution example, the WEINIG App Suite bundles several monitoring functions: viaMonitor for status and evaluations, viaNotify for alarms and messages, viaOrder for order details and progress, viaMaintain for upcoming maintenance and viaCondition for monitoring the condition of machine elements. Free features include information on the machine fleet, calculators for angles, planing steps and remaining lengths, and a channel for support requests. The monitoring functions can be booked for a monthly fee. The app is built on the Simplifier low-code platform, and app accounts are matched to customer and installed-base data via Salesforce. It runs on iOS, Android and in the browser.

The example comes from mechanical and plant engineering. The WEINIG Group builds woodworking machines for the process chain from sawmill to windows and profile mouldings and has offered an app since 2015. Because the first version had been developed as proprietary software, every change cost considerable time and money. Simplifier rebuilt the core functions, modernised the interface and navigation, and introduced role and rights management. Individual functions can now be assigned to each account, and a demo version is possible. A trained WEINIG software architect has since built new applications in-house, without an external service provider.

Industrial woodworking machinery: frequently asked questions

What does industrial woodworking machine monitoring via app cover?

Operators can monitor current and historical machine status, alarms and messages, the progress of production orders, upcoming maintenance and the condition of machine elements. In the WEINIG App Suite, this is handled by viaMonitor, viaNotify, viaOrder, viaMaintain and viaCondition. Operators can thus keep track of their machines' production worldwide and in real time.

How does a manufacturer build an industrial woodworking machine app?

WEINIG relies on a low-code platform so that new functions can be added without costly redevelopment. The first app, developed as proprietary software, could only be changed with considerable time and expense. Simplifier rebuilt the core functions and trained a WEINIG software architect. Since then, WEINIG has built the applications it needs itself, with interfaces such as Salesforce easy to integrate.

How does an app support woodworking machinery service?

The app connects operators directly with the manufacturer's service team. In the WEINIG App Suite, customers can contact a WEINIG expert by email or phone or send messages directly from the app. Each customer sees an overview of their machine fleet including contact persons. viaMaintain also shows upcoming maintenance, so service visits can be planned better.

How does remote monitoring of woodworking machines become a paid service?

WEINIG separates free basic functions from monitoring features that customers book. Information on the machine fleet, calculation tools and the support channel are free. Monitoring of current and historical machine status and order progress is available for a monthly fee. Thanks to the new user management, individual functions can be assigned to each account and a demo version can be offered.

Pump

Pump

Pump monitoring with IoT records vibration, temperature, pressure and energy consumption of running pumps. Operators detect damage and faults before a pump fails and plan maintenance by condition rather than at fixed intervals.

Compressor

Compressor

With IoT, compressor maintenance follows actual condition: sensors record current consumption, pressure, temperature and running times. Operators detect creeping damage and unused running time early and cut energy and service costs.

Electric motor

Electric motor

Motor condition monitoring with IoT continuously measures the vibration, temperature and current draw of electric motors. Operators detect imbalance, bearing damage or winding faults early and replace motors based on condition rather than after a failure.

Packaging machine

Packaging machine

OEE software automatically records run times, downtime, speed and rejects on packaging machines from the machine signals. Operators see where their lines lose performance, and machine builders use the same data for remote access and digital services.

Refrigeration system

Refrigeration system

A refrigeration monitoring system makes service plannable: temperatures, refrigerant circuit pressures, compressor status and energy consumption flow into a platform in real time. Operators and service partners detect faults early, avoid unnecessary site visits and reduce excess consumption.

Air conditioning system

Air conditioning system

Commercial air conditioning systems in offices, retail branches and data centres can be monitored remotely with IoT. Operators see energy consumption, temperatures and faults in one place, detect failing compressors or refrigerant shortages early and plan service visits precisely.
