Printing press
A connected industrial printing machine delivers process data directly from its controller. Printers identify the causes of extra proofs and downtime faster, while machine builders support their equipment worldwide via remote access and see how customers actually use it.

CC-Link IE TSN drives innovation in Keller’s industrial printing technologies
Industrial printing machine: proofs, downtime, remote access
In packaging printing, the ENLYZE Manufacturing Data Platform reads process data from the controllers of a gravure printing machine, detects downtime automatically and prepares the proof data digitally. Pantec connects its finishing machines to the IXON Cloud via edge gateways; user roles determine which service technician can access which machine. At Keller, an iQ-R series PLC from Mitsubishi Electric controls a total of 65 MR-J5 servo drives via CC-Link IE TSN. The network enables deterministic control of up to 128 axes with synchronisation accuracy in the microsecond range.
The examples come from packaging printing and mechanical engineering. A manufacturer of flexible packaging with more than a dozen sites in Europe used ENLYZE to raise its share of first-time-right proofs from 70 to 78 percent; jobs that used to need several proofs are now usually optimised on the same day. Machine data showed Pantec that for customers with short jobs, changeover time matters more than speed, and Pantec also offers its Foil Optimizer via the cloud. Keller combines screen printing and hot stamping on bottles, and podcast episode #140 presents its collaboration with Mitsubishi Electric and the CLPA.

Industrial printing machines: frequently asked questions
How can flexible packaging printing get proofs right first time more often?
With real-time data from the printing machine that immediately reveals the causes of additional proofs. A manufacturer of flexible packaging used to analyse proofs manually in monthly meetings. With the ENLYZE platform, proof data is prepared digitally and discussed by the team on the same day. The share of perfect first proofs rose from 70 to 78 percent, exceeding the target of 75 percent.
How does a label finishing machine builder connect its machines worldwide?
Via an edge gateway on each machine and a cloud portal with user roles. In 2020, Pantec, a specialist in label and packaging finishing, looked for a new solution because access to machines in China was very unreliable. With the IXON Cloud, external service technicians are given access only to the machines they are responsible for. Pantec also offers its Foil Optimizer via the cloud, which calculates the parameters for its foil-saving technology.
How does machine data show whether makeready or speed matters more?
The data shows how customers actually use their machines. Pantec observed machine behaviour at selected pilot customers via the IXON Cloud. Management had long believed that the main benefit lay in the high stroke rate. For some customers, however, short jobs never used the available speeds; for them, changeover time matters more than production speed. This insight now shapes the company's development goals.
What data does a gravure press provide in packaging printing?
The process data comes directly from the machine's controllers. At a manufacturer of flexible packaging, the ENLYZE Manufacturing Data Platform reads it out, prepares it and makes it available in an app. The platform detects downtime automatically; operators comment on it quickly and then focus on solutions. Thanks to digitally prepared proof data, the team discusses difficult jobs on the same day.

Pump
Pump monitoring with IoT records vibration, temperature, pressure and energy consumption of running pumps. Operators detect damage and faults before a pump fails and plan maintenance by condition rather than at fixed intervals.
Compressor
With IoT, compressor maintenance follows actual condition: sensors record current consumption, pressure, temperature and running times. Operators detect creeping damage and unused running time early and cut energy and service costs.
Electric motor
Motor condition monitoring with IoT continuously measures the vibration, temperature and current draw of electric motors. Operators detect imbalance, bearing damage or winding faults early and replace motors based on condition rather than after a failure.
Packaging machine
OEE software automatically records run times, downtime, speed and rejects on packaging machines from the machine signals. Operators see where their lines lose performance, and machine builders use the same data for remote access and digital services.
Refrigeration system
A refrigeration monitoring system makes service plannable: temperatures, refrigerant circuit pressures, compressor status and energy consumption flow into a platform in real time. Operators and service partners detect faults early, avoid unnecessary site visits and reduce excess consumption.
Air conditioning system
Commercial air conditioning systems in offices, retail branches and data centres can be monitored remotely with IoT. Operators see energy consumption, temperatures and faults in one place, detect failing compressors or refrigerant shortages early and plan service visits precisely.
