Gas pressure regulating station

A gas pressure regulating station can be monitored continuously for escaping methane using stationary IoT sensors. Municipal utilities detect leaks sooner than with manual inspections and document emissions without gaps.

Gas pressure regulating station: continuous methane monitoring via IoT

In the solution example, Honeywell's battery-powered Versatilis Signal Scout methane detector is mounted permanently at the station without any wiring. It measures methane concentration in the ambient air plus temperature, pressure and humidity, is suitable for hazardous areas and delivers readings at short intervals. The data travels encrypted via LoRaWAN to a gateway and from there via MQTT to a software platform that processes it in real time. The platform locates leaks, calculates the emission rate and reports limit violations by email or other channels. The ambient readings help distinguish a real leak from normal fluctuations.

The example comes from energy and environment and covers leak detection and emissions monitoring in condition monitoring. Until now, utilities have mainly checked their gas networks through manual inspections, which capture only individual points in time and tie up a lot of staff. The EU Methane Regulation requires operators to measure emissions and report them in a structured way. In a gas pressure regulating station, the Honeywell sensors detected a methane leak during maintenance work: concentration rose to over 13,000 ppm in less than half an hour. It took more than seven hours to return to a non-critical level. The amount released was calculated at around 145 grams.

Gas pressure regulating stations: frequently asked questions

How can a gas regulator station be retrofitted with sensors?

The simplest way is with battery-powered sensors that are mounted without wiring. Honeywell's Versatilis Signal Scout is installed permanently at gas pressure regulating and metering stations and transmits via LoRaWAN. Because neither power nor data cables are needed, many sensors can be rolled out at existing sites in a short time. According to the solution example, the batteries power the sensors for many years.

How does methane monitoring work in a regulator station?

A stationary sensor continuously measures the methane concentration in the air inside the station. The Honeywell sensors respond to changes in the thermodynamic properties of the air caused by methane and convert this effect into a concentration value. Temperature, humidity and pressure, also recorded, help account for dilution and environmental influences. The platform reports limit violations automatically.

What does monitoring show when a district regulator station leaks?

Monitoring shows the entire course of the event, from the first rise to the gradual decline. In the practical example, concentration rose to over 13,000 ppm in less than half an hour during maintenance work. Briefly opening the door brought it down quickly, after which it fell slowly. After more than seven hours it was non-critical again, and the amount released was around 145 grams.

How does continuous monitoring change gas regulating station maintenance?

Instead of checking stations on suspicion during inspection rounds, utilities respond specifically to reported leaks. According to the solution example, automated methane monitoring leads to earlier detection and shortens the time to repair. Staff can be deployed more effectively. The collected data also reveals patterns, such as sites with more frequent leaks, and helps plan maintenance measures better.
