Workpiece

Manufacturing traceability assigns each workpiece its identifier, its position and all process and inspection data. Manufacturers can thus document every work step and detect quality deviations before scrap is produced.

Manufacturing traceability: identifying every workpiece

In the solution examples, workpieces are identified by RFID readers or barcode scanners distributed across the plant. The Data Collector from iT Engineering Software Innovations assigns time-synchronised sensor data to them, such as robot performance data or the torque of electronic screwdrivers. SICK locates workpieces, vehicles and materials to the centimetre with its UWB-based Tag-LOC system, and with geofencing, defined zones automatically trigger ERP bookings. On machine tools, the Siemens Industrial Edge for Machine Tools platform records currents and setpoint and actual position values and checks every part against a trained model.

The examples come from mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, automotive supply and intralogistics, mostly for digital traceability, end-to-end control and predictive quality assurance. Busch-Jaeger and neogramm produce the individually configurable Busch-tacteo KNX sensor from batch size one. Every workpiece is marked, scanned and checked by camera, and every work step remains verifiable from the order to packaging. With the Siemens Analyze MyWorkpiece app, the user automatically learns during milling whether the process is within the trained tolerance, without any intervention in the control system.

Manufacturing traceability: frequently asked questions

How does production traceability work with batch size one?

Traceability works when data and recipes are managed one level above the individual machine and assigned to each workpiece. At Busch-Jaeger, the line implemented by neogramm marks every workpiece uniquely, scans it and checks it continuously by camera. The machines communicate via OPC UA, and ABB zenon manages the operating data. This keeps every work step verifiable, from the order data to quality inspection and packaging.

What is predictive quality in manufacturing?

Predictive quality uses data analysis to forecast the quality of manufactured parts before scrap is produced. The basis is that tools, assembly stations and workpieces are uniquely marked and networked. With the IIoT Building Blocks from iT Engineering Software Innovations, measurement data is assigned to the individual workpiece via RFID. This makes it possible to recognise dependencies between complex influencing factors in advance, such as tolerances stretched to the limit between batches or the temperature in the production hall.

How does UWB positioning locate workpieces in production?

A UWB system locates workpieces using small radio tags whose signals are received by permanently installed antennas. SICK's Tag-LOC system determines positions to the centimetre in this way, even inside buildings where GPS does not work. Objects without their own tag are recorded indirectly via barcode or QR code with a handheld scanner. With geofencing, defined zones automatically trigger follow-up processes such as notifications or ERP rebookings.

How can every workpiece be checked automatically during milling?

Every workpiece can be checked by comparing the control data during machining with a trained model of good parts. For this, the Siemens Analyze MyWorkpiece /Monitor app records currents, setpoint and actual position values and position control deviations. In operation, it recognises the part automatically and reports whether the process is within tolerance. The platform runs on an industrial PC in the control cabinet and only queries data, without changing the process.

Parcel

Parcel

Parcel sorting with IoT starts in goods receiving, where sensors capture each parcel’s tracking number, size and weight. Shipments are routed by priority, packing teams know early what is coming, and manual scanning ends.

Printed circuit board

Printed circuit board

PCB manufacturing digitalisation connects machines, controllers and the ERP so that every printed circuit board is produced with the right parameters. Manufacturers detect downtime and bottlenecks, avoid operating errors and give customers the production data they ask for.

Raw material batch

Raw material batch

Batch management with IoT links every raw material batch to weighing data, test results and the production order. When deviations or audits occur, manufacturers see at once which batch went into which product instead of searching paper and Excel files.

Goods in transit

Goods in transit

Cargo theft prevention starts with IoT trackers that report the position, temperature and shocks of goods in transit. They show shippers at all times where their goods are and reveal break-in attempts, delays or problems in the cold chain.

Injection-moulded part

Injection-moulded part

Injection moulding defects often show up in cooling and process data before they become visible on the moulded part. IoT continuously records mould temperature, cooling water and machine data so that deviations are noticed before faulty parts are produced.

Inventory

Inventory

Real time inventory tracking with IoT records stock automatically: sensors, code readers and RFID book every withdrawal and load as soon as it moves. Teams save warehouse walks and manual counts, and the ERP knows the actual stock level.
