Raw material batch
Batch management with IoT links every raw material batch to weighing data, test results and the production order. When deviations or audits occur, manufacturers see at once which batch went into which product instead of searching paper and Excel files.

Batch management for raw materials: follow each batch to the product
In the solution examples, data capture starts at goods receipt and at the scales. Dosing systems and manual weighing stations feed into one central weighing system; at manual steps the software makes entering the batch number mandatory, including batch splits from several containers. Production orders arrive from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central via a REST interface and are buffered locally so that production continues during short connection losses. In pipe manufacturing, Azure IoT Edge modules connect the machines to Microsoft Azure via OPC UA, while scales, cameras and barcode scanners record the material. For stocks of raw materials and semi-finished goods, Apache Kafka streams the data in real time.
The examples come from chemicals and the automotive industry. Together with Innomat Automation and its Kalisto software, Epple Druckfarben has integrated its dosing systems and six manual and semi-automated weighing stations. Batch and weighing data reach the ERP without delay, and missing or incorrect batch numbers are ruled out; podcast episode #170 tells the story. With daenet (ACP Digital), FRÄNKISCHE traces every pipe from raw material to delivery. Michelin relies on Confluent Cloud for a real-time view of raw materials and semi-finished goods.

Batch management for raw materials: frequently asked questions
How does batch recording work when weighing raw materials?
Batch recording happens automatically when a central weighing system captures every weighing with quantity and batch number and reports it to the ERP once the work step is confirmed. At Epple Druckfarben, fully automatic dosing systems and six manual and semi-automated workstations come together in the Kalisto software from Innomat Automation. Automatic dosing values are taken over directly, and at manual workstations entering the batch is mandatory.
How does batch management software replace paper and Excel?
Batch records become digital when all weighings and material items are captured in one system and passed to the ERP immediately. At Epple Druckfarben, tracing raw materials, semi-finished and finished products used to rely partly on paper and Excel, which took a lot of time during product deviations or audits. Today, the data is available in structured form in the cloud ERP Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central after every work step.
How are splits of a raw material batch documented?
At manual work steps, the operator must enter the batch number, and the software assigns it to the relevant material item. If a raw material comes from several containers with different batches, the software records the batch split as well. At Epple Druckfarben, even mixing processes with several raw material sources are therefore fully documented in digital form. The system systematically rules out missing or incorrect batch numbers.
How can raw material inspection results be linked to batches?
Inspection results are recorded on a shared platform and linked there to the batch of the raw material. FRÄNKISCHE set out to assign raw material checks, incoming inspections, internal tests and supplier tests to the batches and built a platform on Microsoft Azure with daenet for this purpose. It also ensures that the right raw material arrives at the right machine in the right mix. Using a unique number, customers can view the recorded data.

Parcel
Parcel sorting with IoT starts in goods receiving, where sensors capture each parcel’s tracking number, size and weight. Shipments are routed by priority, packing teams know early what is coming, and manual scanning ends.
Workpiece
Manufacturing traceability assigns each workpiece its identifier, its position and all process and inspection data. Manufacturers can thus document every work step and detect quality deviations before scrap is produced.
Printed circuit board
PCB manufacturing digitalisation connects machines, controllers and the ERP so that every printed circuit board is produced with the right parameters. Manufacturers detect downtime and bottlenecks, avoid operating errors and give customers the production data they ask for.
Goods in transit
Cargo theft prevention starts with IoT trackers that report the position, temperature and shocks of goods in transit. They show shippers at all times where their goods are and reveal break-in attempts, delays or problems in the cold chain.
Injection-moulded part
Injection moulding defects often show up in cooling and process data before they become visible on the moulded part. IoT continuously records mould temperature, cooling water and machine data so that deviations are noticed before faulty parts are produced.
Inventory
Real time inventory tracking with IoT records stock automatically: sensors, code readers and RFID book every withdrawal and load as soon as it moves. Teams save warehouse walks and manual counts, and the ERP knows the actual stock level.
