Inventory

Real time inventory tracking with IoT records stock automatically: sensors, code readers and RFID book every withdrawal and load as soon as it moves. Teams save warehouse walks and manual counts, and the ERP knows the actual stock level.

Real time inventory tracking instead of manual counts

SICK's ALDIS system equips forklifts with distance sensors to detect loads and with RFID, laser scanners or cameras to identify them. The cameras read 1D and 2D codes even when they are damaged or dirty. A Telematic Data Collector controls the sensors and transmits the data via cellular network or Wi-Fi; the position of vehicle and load comes from GPS outdoors and UWB indoors. The data is evaluated in the Asset Analytics software. Neoception identifies parts containers by RFID or barcode and fits the shelf compartments with smart labels that show the material number and name. Pressing a button on the label triggers a withdrawal, reorder or refill in the warehouse management system.

Both examples come from transport and logistics. With ALDIS, loading and unloading are tracked in real time, search times fall and process reliability increases; the system can be retrofitted to existing forklift fleets regardless of make and year. Neoception's kanban solution is cloud-based and integrates with leading ERP systems. Stock figures, safety stock and reorder points no longer have to be transferred from paper into the system, and manual stocktaking time is reduced to a minimum.

Real time inventory tracking: frequently asked questions

How can inventory counting be automated?

The inventory count can be automated if every material movement is booked at the moment of withdrawal or refill. In Neoception's solution, RFID or barcodes identify each parts container, and smart labels on the shelf compartments trigger the booking at the press of a button. Because the stock in the system is always up to date, manual counts are largely unnecessary. The time-consuming transfer of paper lists into the ERP also disappears.

How does automated stock replenishment work in the warehouse?

Automated stock replenishment starts with the withdrawal: staff press a button on the smart label of the shelf compartment, and the same action can trigger a reorder or refill in the warehouse management system. At Neoception, RFID or barcodes also identify each parts container. Optical sensors in the labels guide staff with light signals on the filling and picking sides. The stock thus stays up to date without extra data entry.

How can reorder points be monitored automatically?

Reorder points can be monitored automatically when stock data is available centrally and in real time rather than on paper. Without digitalisation, stock figures, minimum quantity, safety stock and reorder point have to be entered into the system by hand after every count. In Neoception's solution, withdrawals are booked automatically, and pressing a button on the smart label triggers the reorder. The kanban logic can be adapted to each process.

How does warehouse inventory tracking work during loading and unloading?

IoT records every load automatically during loading and unloading instead of staff entering it with a handheld scanner. With SICK's ALDIS, distance sensors on the forklift detect the load, and RFID, laser or camera identify it. GPS outdoors and UWB indoors provide the position. This shows at any time where material, pallet and forklift are, and the data is available in Asset Analytics for tracking.

Parcel

Parcel sorting with IoT starts in goods receiving, where sensors capture each parcel’s tracking number, size and weight. Shipments are routed by priority, packing teams know early what is coming, and manual scanning ends.

Workpiece

Workpiece

Manufacturing traceability assigns each workpiece its identifier, its position and all process and inspection data. Manufacturers can thus document every work step and detect quality deviations before scrap is produced.

Printed circuit board

PCB manufacturing digitalisation connects machines, controllers and the ERP so that every printed circuit board is produced with the right parameters. Manufacturers detect downtime and bottlenecks, avoid operating errors and give customers the production data they ask for.

Raw material batch

Raw material batch

Batch management with IoT links every raw material batch to weighing data, test results and the production order. When deviations or audits occur, manufacturers see at once which batch went into which product instead of searching paper and Excel files.

Goods in transit

Goods in transit

Cargo theft prevention starts with IoT trackers that report the position, temperature and shocks of goods in transit. They show shippers at all times where their goods are and reveal break-in attempts, delays or problems in the cold chain.

Injection-moulded part

Injection-moulded part

Injection moulding defects often show up in cooling and process data before they become visible on the moulded part. IoT continuously records mould temperature, cooling water and machine data so that deviations are noticed before faulty parts are produced.
