Timber

The EUDR requires manufacturers and traders of timber products to prove that their wood has not contributed to deforestation. Standardised product data and connected machines record origin and material properties along the supply chain, down to each component.

EUDR: proving the origin of timber with standardised product data

In the solution example, the foundation is the open classification standard ECLASS, which defines properties, units and value classes for products and offers machine-readable mappings to other standards. morphe* integrates the Asset Administration Shell into the IT landscape: it documents a product over its entire life cycle, with master data and dynamic data from repairs or use, and can become the basis for a digital product passport. In the sawmill, sensors on the machines capture status and process data and send it via an edge gateway to the Cumulocity IoT cloud platform. A KPI app from logicline, built with the assets360 toolkit, shows figures such as the cutting volume per hour.

Furniture and kitchen manufacturers are particularly affected, as they process wood from many sources and need precise material data for every component, which conventional ERP systems do not hold at this level. ECLASS e.V. and morphe* show how consistent product data solves this; podcast episode #155 covers the experience of Nolte Küchen with digital product passports and master data. In sawmills, a machine builder has expanded its portfolio with digital services together with logicline: sawmills see availability, performance, downtime and causes of faults. Episode #49 tells this story.

EUDR and timber: frequently asked questions

What are the EUDR timber requirements for manufacturers and traders?

Manufacturers, traders and importers of timber products such as furniture, construction timber, pulp, paper goods or wooden packaging must prove that the wood they use has not led to deforestation. The regulation aims to keep products from illegal or unsustainable deforestation off the EU single market. It focuses above all on the production process and the place of production and also covers intermediate products and individual components.

How does timber traceability work for furniture manufacturers under the EUDR?

Furniture manufacturers need material data down to the level of each component, and conventional ERP systems often do not hold it. A cabinet base, for example, is made of wood, is coated and has a particular surface. The ECLASS standard represents such information digitally, and morphe* supports companies in building the product data architecture. Suppliers from different countries can then use the same product data.

What data foundation does the timber industry need for the EUDR?

For the EUDR, the timber industry needs continuous data exchange across all suppliers and a shared data language for it. In practice, data on the materials used is often missing because standards are lacking and IT structures have grown over time. ECLASS ensures that machines and software systems speak the same language. Secure data spaces with a federated architecture make it possible to share product data in a controlled way while each company keeps control of its own data.

How do sawmills provide the data for timber due diligence?

Sawmills need to know the entire value chain from the forestry operation to their products and combine data from different sources. What matters most is which region the wood comes from and which pesticides were used. In logicline's solution, sensors on the machines capture status and process data, an edge gateway sends it to the Cumulocity IoT cloud platform, and a KPI app integrates existing databases.

Parcel

Parcel

Parcel sorting with IoT starts in goods receiving, where sensors capture each parcel’s tracking number, size and weight. Shipments are routed by priority, packing teams know early what is coming, and manual scanning ends.

Workpiece

Workpiece

Manufacturing traceability assigns each workpiece its identifier, its position and all process and inspection data. Manufacturers can thus document every work step and detect quality deviations before scrap is produced.

Printed circuit board

PCB manufacturing digitalisation connects machines, controllers and the ERP so that every printed circuit board is produced with the right parameters. Manufacturers detect downtime and bottlenecks, avoid operating errors and give customers the production data they ask for.

Raw material batch

Batch management with IoT links every raw material batch to weighing data, test results and the production order. When deviations or audits occur, manufacturers see at once which batch went into which product instead of searching paper and Excel files.

Goods in transit

Cargo theft prevention starts with IoT trackers that report the position, temperature and shocks of goods in transit. They show shippers at all times where their goods are and reveal break-in attempts, delays or problems in the cold chain.

Injection-moulded part

Injection moulding defects often show up in cooling and process data before they become visible on the moulded part. IoT continuously records mould temperature, cooling water and machine data so that deviations are noticed before faulty parts are produced.
