Solar module

On a solar panel production line, AI-based image recognition takes over quality inspection. Camera and software detect scratches, cracks and defects in the glass cover that human inspectors and conventional measuring devices miss.

Solar panel production line: AI inspects every module

In the solution example, elunic AG uses its AI.SEE system, which is based on machine learning and computer vision. AI.SEE Lens is a flexible camera and lighting system, AI.SEE Edge evaluates the images directly on the line and controls the next process step, and the self-learning AI.SEE Control software manages the models. The system reads serial numbers and type plates, recognises, counts and measures components, and checks surfaces for colour deviations, scratches, cracks, dents or voids. It also works under fluctuating light and changing perspectives.

The user is a manufacturer of solar modules that wanted to automate its final inspection. Its inspectors were subject to day-to-day fluctuations and fatigue, so not every defect was spotted straight away. Pre-trained models recognised typical quality problems immediately and were adapted to the modules in a short training phase. After that, inspection ran faster than the visual check, and the share of defect-free modules rose significantly. A statistical analysis of the quality data also reduced staffing effort and quality assurance costs. In podcast episode 25, elunic board member Jonas Schaub explains how neural networks take over optical inspections previously carried out by people.

Solar module inspection: frequently asked questions

How can solar panel quality control be automated?

With a camera on the line and AI that evaluates every module for defects. In the elunic solution example, AI.SEE Lens captures the images, while AI.SEE Edge evaluates them on site and controls the next process step. The system can be integrated into running production processes and replaces fatigue-prone manual visual inspection with consistent detection performance.

Which defects does AI find in the glass cover of a solar module?

The AI finds scratches, cracks and clouding that conventional measuring devices do not detect. These defects in the glass cover were exactly what had often slipped through at the module manufacturer in the solution example. The system also recognises colour deviations, dents and voids on surfaces. Because the software starts with pre-trained models, it detects typical quality problems straight away and learns the specifics of the manufacturer's own modules within a short time.

What does AI defect detection bring to solar panel production?

It increases the share of defect-free modules and lowers quality assurance costs. The manufacturer in the solution example significantly increased the share of defect-free, high-quality modules compared with its previous inspection. A statistical analysis of the inspection results led to further process improvements, reducing staffing effort and costs. The AI also works faster than visual inspection and does not tire.

Can image recognition also read serial numbers on solar modules?

Yes, the image recognition reads text such as serial numbers and type plates directly on the line. elunic's AI.SEE combines this task with surface inspection and with recognising, counting and measuring assemblies and components. A single inspection step thus produces a data record per module that links its identity with the inspection result and is available for later statistical analysis of quality.

Parcel

Parcel

Parcel sorting with IoT starts in goods receiving, where sensors capture each parcel’s tracking number, size and weight. Shipments are routed by priority, packing teams know early what is coming, and manual scanning ends.

Workpiece

Manufacturing traceability assigns each workpiece its identifier, its position and all process and inspection data. Manufacturers can thus document every work step and detect quality deviations before scrap is produced.

Raw material batch

Batch management with IoT links every raw material batch to weighing data, test results and the production order. When deviations or audits occur, manufacturers see at once which batch went into which product instead of searching paper and Excel files.

Goods in transit

Goods in transit

Cargo theft prevention starts with IoT trackers that report the position, temperature and shocks of goods in transit. They show shippers at all times where their goods are and reveal break-in attempts, delays or problems in the cold chain.

Injection-moulded part

Injection-moulded part

Injection moulding defects often show up in cooling and process data before they become visible on the moulded part. IoT continuously records mould temperature, cooling water and machine data so that deviations are noticed before faulty parts are produced.
