Production material

Material tracking software with IoT makes material flow between warehouse and production visible: radio tags and sensors show in real time where production material is and how much is at the point of use. Search times and booking errors fall.

Material tracking software: know where production material is

SICK locates material with its LOCU system using ultra-wideband: every object with a LOCU tag is detected by receiving antennas and located to within less than one metre, with up to 1,000 updates per second. The open omlox standard allows devices from different manufacturers and combination with RFID, 5G or GPS. The Asset Analytics platform shows movement profiles as well as transport and idle times, and the track and trace option for the SAP Logistics Business Network triggers goods receipt and goods issue automatically. At Bosch Connected Industry, the Stock Management application of the Nexeed Industrial Application System records every material movement in the supermarket via RFID, barcode or sensor, and put-to-light signals show the storage location.

In mechanical and plant engineering, SICK introduced its own SmaRTLog solution between separate warehouse and production sites. Throughput time fell by 20 per cent, searching for missing material now takes 15 instead of 45 minutes, and overall equipment effectiveness rose by ten to 20 per cent. With the Bosch Connected Industry solution, the position and quantity of production materials are known at all times, and digital relabelling reduces search and booking effort. In podcast episode #73, Roland Avar of SICK explains the business cases for real-time location.

Material tracking: frequently asked questions

How does shortage management avoid long searches for missing material?

Long searches for missing parts can be avoided when every material movement is captured automatically and can be analysed. SICK combines material location with its Asset Analytics platform, which shows movement profiles as well as transport and idle times. Event management automates bookings in the inventory management system. In its own operations, SICK thus cut the search time for missing material from 45 to 15 minutes and throughput time by 20 per cent.

How does assembly line feeding across sites become transparent?

Assembly line feeding across sites becomes transparent when the position and status of every transport are reported automatically. At SICK, production sites are located away from the warehouse, and staff used to have to check on site. Today, the trolleys send events to the SAP Logistics Business Network as they pass through defined warehouse zones. When a trolley is loaded onto the truck or arrives at production, the system books goods issue and goods receipt automatically.

How precisely can material location tracking find production material?

With SICK's LOCU system, production material can be located to within less than one metre, with up to 1,000 updates per second. Each object carries a LOCU tag that receiving antennas detect and identify unambiguously. Parts remain visible even when they leave a fixed assembly line or conveyor on industrial trucks. From this data, Asset Analytics displays movement profiles as well as transport and idle times and shortens the search for material.

How does digital material replenishment prevent booking errors in a supermarket?

Digital material replenishment books every movement automatically and uses a light signal to show which lane new material belongs in. In the Stock Management application from Bosch Connected Industry, all material movements in the supermarket are recorded via RFID, barcode or sensor, and put-to-light signals point out errors. Visual tags show in real time which material number is in which lane. This reduces both the error rate and search effort.

Parcel

Parcel

Parcel sorting with IoT starts in goods receiving, where sensors capture each parcel’s tracking number, size and weight. Shipments are routed by priority, packing teams know early what is coming, and manual scanning ends.

Workpiece

Workpiece

Manufacturing traceability assigns each workpiece its identifier, its position and all process and inspection data. Manufacturers can thus document every work step and detect quality deviations before scrap is produced.

Printed circuit board

PCB manufacturing digitalisation connects machines, controllers and the ERP so that every printed circuit board is produced with the right parameters. Manufacturers detect downtime and bottlenecks, avoid operating errors and give customers the production data they ask for.

Raw material batch

Raw material batch

Batch management with IoT links every raw material batch to weighing data, test results and the production order. When deviations or audits occur, manufacturers see at once which batch went into which product instead of searching paper and Excel files.

Goods in transit

Goods in transit

Cargo theft prevention starts with IoT trackers that report the position, temperature and shocks of goods in transit. They show shippers at all times where their goods are and reveal break-in attempts, delays or problems in the cold chain.

Injection-moulded part

Injection moulding defects often show up in cooling and process data before they become visible on the moulded part. IoT continuously records mould temperature, cooling water and machine data so that deviations are noticed before faulty parts are produced.
