Water meter
An AMI water meter transmits readings and flow data automatically via cellular or radio networks to an IoT platform. Utilities, municipalities and businesses avoid reading rounds, see consumption promptly and detect leaks earlier.

AMI water meters: consumption daily, not once a year
In the solution examples, Heitland's ultrasonic water meter transmits its data directly via Telekom's NB-IoT network, in one test even from a two-metre-deep water tank. Existing meters with a pulse output can be retrofitted with PSsystec's battery-powered SMARTebox nanoIO data logger, which transmits via LTE-M or NB-IoT and runs for up to five years on five standard batteries. GELSENWASSER collects water and heat consumption via LoRaWAN, while in Oberzent flow, level and pressure instruments feed into Endress+Hauser's Netilion platform via a LoRaWAN network and WAGO gateways. In an Australian project with Cumulocity, consumption data is available every 15 minutes instead of once a quarter.
The examples come from energy and environment, agriculture and public administration, mostly as remote reading, smart metering or leak detection. GELSENWASSER is installing around 200,000 digital water meters and uses the GELSENWASSER-Monitor with AI-based anomaly detection to warn of leaks and pipe bursts. A German district uses PSsystec to compare irrigation flow volumes with planned time windows, which has reduced water consumption and made manual checks unnecessary. At Australian water authorities, customers using the Cumulocity-based IoT solution consumed 22 percent less water than non-users.

Smart water meters: frequently asked questions
How does remote water meter reading work?
With remote reading, the water meter or a connected data logger sends its readings automatically to an IoT platform. Older meters with a pulse output are retrofitted for this, while new ultrasonic meters already have a radio connection built in. The platform displays consumption, calculates flow and raises an alarm when patterns are unusual. Reading rounds and postcards to customers are no longer needed, and consumption is visible day by day instead of once a year.
Which wireless technology do connected water meters use?
The connected water meters in the solution examples transmit via NB-IoT, LTE-M or LoRaWAN. NB-IoT runs on the public cellular network and needs neither a private network nor the homeowner's Wi-Fi, which is why Heitland uses it. LoRaWAN is suitable wherever such a network exists, for example in Oberzent, where the energy supplier Entega has built one. For meters in shafts where the signal is heavily attenuated, PSsystec offers an external antenna.
How do utilities run a water meter replacement programme?
Utilities replace water meters in cycles because the German Measurement and Calibration Act generally requires them to be replaced after six years. After six years, a sample inspection of the installed meters is also possible. Mechanical meters fail it so often, however, that utilities replace all of them as a precaution. According to the manufacturer, Heitland's NB-IoT ultrasonic water meter can stay in service for at least twelve years, with the battery determining the end of its service life.
What can a connected ultrasonic water meter do?
A connected ultrasonic water meter provides daily consumption values and, according to Heitland, stays more accurate than conventional meters over many years. Its internal memory stores historical data that can be read out if a customer disputes a bill. End users see their data in an app and can set alarms there for frost or leaks in the household installation. In one test, such a meter sent its data every day from a two-metre-deep water tank.

Filter
Filter monitoring with IoT measures the differential pressure across a filter and shows how dirty it is. Operators change filters when it is actually necessary, avoid clogged filters and downtime, and save energy and material.
Energy chain
An energy chain with IoT sensors continuously reports the condition of the cable management on moving machinery. Operators learn about overload, blockages or chain breakage before the machine stops, and plan chain replacement according to actual use.
Lighting
Commercial lighting control with IoT adjusts the lighting in offices, halls, shops and advertising installations according to occupancy, brightness and schedules, and monitors every luminaire remotely. Operators cut electricity consumption and learn about failures immediately.
Electricity meter
Automatic meter reading means that electricity meter readings reach a platform via radio, cellular network or pulse adapter, with no on-site reading. Operators bill more accurately and see where energy is consumed in a building or in production.
Charging station
Commercial EV charging relies on load management that distributes the available power across all charging stations at a site and monitors them remotely. Operators avoid overloading the grid connection, integrate photovoltaics and storage, and bill sessions automatically.
Piping network
Pipeline monitoring with IoT reports pressure drops, pressure peaks and moisture under insulation in a piping network before they turn into failures. Operators maintain pipes according to their condition and avoid inspection rounds to hard-to-reach measuring points.
