Charging station

Commercial EV charging relies on load management that distributes the available power across all charging stations at a site and monitors them remotely. Operators avoid overloading the grid connection, integrate photovoltaics and storage, and bill sessions automatically.

Commercial EV charging: load management and remote operation

In the solution examples, a controller on site manages the energy flows. In The Mobility House’s ChargePilot, this is a RevPi Connect from KUNBUS, which balances charging points, grid connection, buildings and photovoltaics to the second and keeps regulating even without an internet connection, while a cloud dashboard shows the charging sessions. Compleo charging stations authenticate users via app or RFID charging card and exchange billing data with the charge point operator via the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP). Cellular connectivity across several networks comes from Round Solutions and Telit. For fast chargers in remote regions, the Cumulocity platform provides real-time data, remote access and dashboards for every unit.

The examples come from the energy sector, logistics and telecommunications, typically for smart charging, billing automation and remote monitoring. At its Sondershausen logistics centre, WAGO integrates the charging infrastructure for staff and fleet vehicles into the building’s load management. PRAMAC Storage Systems supplies two charging stations with four charging points for its electric company fleet from a battery storage system in a container. A fast-charging technology company launched its solution on Cumulocity in half the time a custom cloud solution would have required.

Commercial EV charging: frequently asked questions

How does EV charging load management work?

Load management continuously measures the load at the grid connection and distributes the available power across the connected charging points so that the connection is not overloaded. In The Mobility House’s ChargePilot, a RevPi Connect handles this directly on site, to the second and even if the internet connection fails. Local consumers such as buildings and generators such as photovoltaic systems are factored in, and the data is also sent to a cloud backend.

What is OCPP used for in EV charging stations?

Via the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP), the charging station exchanges authentication and billing data with the charge point operator. At Compleo, users identify themselves via app or RFID charging card, and backend systems in the cloud check the authorisation and start the charging session. Billing data is passed on to the e-mobility provider. Through roaming platforms, its customers can charge at every charging point, even with different tariffs.

How do businesses integrate EV charging into their energy management?

Businesses integrate charging stations into their energy management together with buildings, generation and storage instead of running them in isolation. At its Sondershausen logistics centre, WAGO records charging station data together with heat pumps, ventilation and lighting and uses it for load management that avoids peak periods. PRAMAC Storage Systems buffers the electricity for its company fleet’s charging stations in a battery storage system that also stores solar power.

What does a charge point management system monitor?

Charging stations send status, usage and billing data to a cloud backend via the cellular network. There, operators see utilisation, reset stations remotely, fix minor technical problems and query the maintenance status, as Compleo describes. Technicians therefore know in advance which spare parts they need. In the solution built on Cumulocity, a central dashboard shows complete installations as well as each individual device.

Filter

Filter

Filter monitoring with IoT measures the differential pressure across a filter and shows how dirty it is. Operators change filters when it is actually necessary, avoid clogged filters and downtime, and save energy and material.

Energy chain

Energy chain

An energy chain with IoT sensors continuously reports the condition of the cable management on moving machinery. Operators learn about overload, blockages or chain breakage before the machine stops, and plan chain replacement according to actual use.

Lighting

Lighting

Commercial lighting control with IoT adjusts the lighting in offices, halls, shops and advertising installations according to occupancy, brightness and schedules, and monitors every luminaire remotely. Operators cut electricity consumption and learn about failures immediately.

Electricity meter

Electricity meter

Automatic meter reading means that electricity meter readings reach a platform via radio, cellular network or pulse adapter, with no on-site reading. Operators bill more accurately and see where energy is consumed in a building or in production.

Piping network

Piping network

Pipeline monitoring with IoT reports pressure drops, pressure peaks and moisture under insulation in a piping network before they turn into failures. Operators maintain pipes according to their condition and avoid inspection rounds to hard-to-reach measuring points.
