Piping network
Pipeline monitoring with IoT reports pressure drops, pressure peaks and moisture under insulation in a piping network before they turn into failures. Operators maintain pipes according to their condition and avoid inspection rounds to hard-to-reach measuring points.

IoT monitoring uncovers energy losses and leaks in compressed air
An LTE sensor from achtBytes measures the pressure in the compressed air system and reveals unnecessary compressor run times, excessive operating pressure and leaks, without any connection to company IT. In one case, the compressor started more than 20 minutes earlier than necessary.

Pipeline monitoring: detect pressure drops and corrosion early
In the solution examples, battery-powered WIKA pressure sensors send their values via LoRaWAN or mioty to a cloud platform, where technicians set limit values without visiting the measuring point. On mobile concrete pumps, Perinet periNODE adapters record line pressure at the hydraulics and transmit it via Single Pair Ethernet to an edge computer that reports critical pressure rises immediately. Together with ML!PA, KAEFER installs sensor strips between pipe and insulation that measure moisture across the entire surface. At the Nesensohn small hydropower plant, a RevPi Connect collects level, temperature and pressure data and transfers it to the digifai IoT platform. At power generation plants, the iCOMOX sensor box measures vibration, acoustics and temperature.
The examples come from energy and environment and from construction, mostly as early damage detection within condition monitoring or predictive maintenance. KAEFER now detects corrosion under insulation continuously rather than through occasional spot checks, including in hazardous areas. A construction machinery manufacturer uses Perinet's HUCKEPACK system to warn early of blockages in the delivery lines of its concrete pumps. At the Nesensohn plant in Austria, the operator has had remote access to all plant data since digifai's retrofit, including the high-level reservoir one kilometre away.

Pipeline monitoring: frequently asked questions
How does IoT pressure monitoring in a piping network work?
Pressure sensors at the measuring points send their values by radio to a platform that raises an alarm when limits are breached. In the district heating networks equipped by WIKA, the smart pressure sensor reports a pressure drop below the limit directly to the platform, and the technician sees the system status and initiates action. According to WIKA, a fault is detected within 30 minutes of occurring at the latest, rather than only when a customer calls.
How can corrosion under insulation be monitored?
Corrosion under insulation can be monitored through the moisture between pipe and insulation. KAEFER and ML!PA install sensor strips directly between the pipe and the insulation that measure moisture across the entire surface. A line test sensor detects short circuits in the strips, and the data is sent via IEEE 802.15.4 radio to an edge device and on to the cloud. The hardware is designed to ATEX requirements and is suitable for hazardous areas.
How is a hydropower penstock monitored?
Pressure, level and temperature sensors deliver their values via an IIoT gateway to a cloud platform that reports deviations. At the Nesensohn small hydropower plant in Austria, digifai integrated level measurement, temperature recording and penstock monitoring into a central monitoring system. A Revolution Pi RevPi Connect collects the sensor data, an intelligent alarm system informs the operator, and industrial cameras complement the monitoring. Machine learning detects trends and deviations early.
When are wireless pressure sensors worthwhile?
Wireless pressure sensors are worthwhile when many measuring points are widely distributed or hard to reach. Network operators used to have to wire each measuring point individually; today, battery-powered WIKA devices connect them via LoRaWAN or mioty with little time and cost. For concrete pumps, by contrast, Perinet chose Single Pair Ethernet, which allows higher sampling rates and works reliably even with strong vibration, dust and extreme temperatures.

Filter
Filter monitoring with IoT measures the differential pressure across a filter and shows how dirty it is. Operators change filters when it is actually necessary, avoid clogged filters and downtime, and save energy and material.
Energy chain
An energy chain with IoT sensors continuously reports the condition of the cable management on moving machinery. Operators learn about overload, blockages or chain breakage before the machine stops, and plan chain replacement according to actual use.
Lighting
Commercial lighting control with IoT adjusts the lighting in offices, halls, shops and advertising installations according to occupancy, brightness and schedules, and monitors every luminaire remotely. Operators cut electricity consumption and learn about failures immediately.
Electricity meter
Automatic meter reading means that electricity meter readings reach a platform via radio, cellular network or pulse adapter, with no on-site reading. Operators bill more accurately and see where energy is consumed in a building or in production.
Charging station
Commercial EV charging relies on load management that distributes the available power across all charging stations at a site and monitors them remotely. Operators avoid overloading the grid connection, integrate photovoltaics and storage, and bill sessions automatically.
Power tool
Connected tools bring rivet tools, screwdrivers and cordless power tools into the networked factory. Every work step is documented, failed attempts are detected, and the data feeds into quality assurance and production control.
