Lighting

Commercial lighting control with IoT adjusts the lighting in offices, halls, shops and advertising installations according to occupancy, brightness and schedules, and monitors every luminaire remotely. Operators cut electricity consumption and learn about failures immediately.

Commercial lighting control: plan, control and monitor lighting

In the solution examples, luminaires, sensors and switches usually communicate via DALI or DALI-2. With LUXONET, B.E.G. Brück Electronic plans luminaire groups and lighting scenes on floor plans in the cloud and transfers the configuration, encrypted via MQTTS, to a DIN rail controller that keeps working offline. For illuminated advertising and billboards, modules report luminaire status and power consumption via cellular network or Narrowband IoT, for example LichtWART with Deutsche Telekom or smart.click from IOX and Projektunion. Energy monitoring solutions such as the PSsystec IoT Energymonitor or Itanta Analytics make the consumption of major loads such as lighting, refrigeration and ventilation visible.

The examples come from technology and telecommunications, real estate, retail and industry, typically for smart lighting, lighting management and energy monitoring. In the BIOME building in Paris, Société Foncière Lyonnaise controls DALI and DALI-2 lighting, including brightness regulation and presence detection, via ICONICS GENESIS64. A retailer with more than 600 branches cut its energy costs by 5 to 10 per cent with PSsystec and TRIBICON, with lighting among the loads recorded. LichtWART reports failures in lighting installations by email, so service technicians arrive with the right spare parts.

Commercial lighting control: frequently asked questions

What role does DALI play in networked lighting control?

In the solution examples, DALI is the standard through which luminaires, sensors and switches are individually addressed and controlled. With B.E.G.’s LUXONET, a DALI gateway scans the line and automatically integrates existing DALI devices, so the system integrator can check the installation without a site visit. The LichtWART module connects to power supplies with a DALI bus and shows the status of all luminaires and converters on a dashboard.

How can illuminated advertising be monitored remotely?

Illuminated advertising can be monitored with a retrofittable IoT module that records the status of the lights and reports it via the cellular network. With LichtWART, a light sensor adjusts brightness to the surroundings, and in the event of a failure an email goes to staff or service technicians, even during a power cut thanks to a backup battery. The smart.click system from IOX and Projektunion also monitors the power consumption of billboard lighting via Narrowband IoT.

How does an energy monitoring system help cut lighting consumption?

Energy monitoring shows when and where systems such as lighting consume electricity, including outside opening hours. In a retail network with more than 600 sites, the PSsystec IoT Energymonitor reads existing meters non-invasively, and installation usually took around two hours per branch. The data reveals load peaks and unnecessary base loads of energy-intensive systems such as lighting, refrigeration and heating. Energy costs fell by 5 to 10 per cent.

How does a lighting control system use occupancy sensors in offices?

A lighting control system uses occupancy sensors to switch or dim the lighting depending on whether a room is in use. In Société Foncière Lyonnaise’s BIOME building in Paris, presence detection and brightness regulation are part of the DALI lighting control via the building management software. At Merck Real Estate, lighting status flows into the CREM SOLUTIONS smart building platform together with space occupancy, temperature and indoor CO₂ levels in order to save energy and space.

Filter

Filter

Filter monitoring with IoT measures the differential pressure across a filter and shows how dirty it is. Operators change filters when it is actually necessary, avoid clogged filters and downtime, and save energy and material.

Energy chain

Energy chain

An energy chain with IoT sensors continuously reports the condition of the cable management on moving machinery. Operators learn about overload, blockages or chain breakage before the machine stops, and plan chain replacement according to actual use.

Electricity meter

Electricity meter

Automatic meter reading means that electricity meter readings reach a platform via radio, cellular network or pulse adapter, with no on-site reading. Operators bill more accurately and see where energy is consumed in a building or in production.

Charging station

Charging station

Commercial EV charging relies on load management that distributes the available power across all charging stations at a site and monitors them remotely. Operators avoid overloading the grid connection, integrate photovoltaics and storage, and bill sessions automatically.

Piping network

Piping network

Pipeline monitoring with IoT reports pressure drops, pressure peaks and moisture under insulation in a piping network before they turn into failures. Operators maintain pipes according to their condition and avoid inspection rounds to hard-to-reach measuring points.
