Truck
Truck tracking with IoT connects every truck to head office and delivers position, operating status and vehicle data in real time. Digital controls and documentation during loading and unloading also reduce manual entries for dispatchers, drivers and shippers.

Optimised machine tracking with industrial IoT

Efficient picking: AI-supported processes in use at the HARTMANN Group

Silo transport digitized: more efficient, safer and more convenient unloading
Truck tracking and telematics: position, vehicle data, loading
In the solution examples, DeDeNet tracking boxes record not only the location but also machine hours and telemetry data via CAN bus, and they read out the digital tachograph. The data travels over the cellular network, in future via 5G, to Telekom data centres and can be retrieved through an open API. Geofences show how long a vehicle was active within an area. On Feldbinder's silo vehicle, the ifm ecomatDisplay combines all controls, ioControl modules collect sensor data via CAN bus, and a GSM, WLAN and Bluetooth interface passes it on to dispatch and billing systems. At the loading ramp, industrial cameras from TTS Automation recognise the truck's number plate, assign it to the ERP order and document the loading via a WAGO controller.
The examples come from construction, logistics, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, often for object localisation, route planning and digital traceability. The Schielicke Bau group tracks its fleet of more than 100 vehicles, including trucks and construction machinery, with DeDeNet and plans machine deployment based on data. With Silo 4.0, Feldbinder and ifm have digitalised unloading, so drivers operate the vehicle from one place and unload faster. The HARTMANN GROUP schedules its picking with AIM.schedule according to truck departure times and shortens the time goods wait at dispatch.
Truck tracking: frequently asked questions
What does truck telematics record besides location?
Besides location, truck telematics records the vehicle's operating status, machine hours and telemetry data. At the Schielicke Bau group, DeDeNet tracking boxes act as a kind of middleware that collects data via CAN bus and other protocols. Digital geofences around a construction site also show how long a device was active there and what temperatures prevailed. Management and project managers can therefore see the progress of a site at a glance in graphical form.
Can a truck's tachograph be downloaded automatically?
Yes, the telematics box in the vehicle can read out the digital tachograph and transmit the data together with location and telemetry. This is how DeDeNet handles the trucks of the Schielicke Bau group. The data is stored in Telekom data centres, and all relevant data can be retrieved through an open API. Vehicle and trip data are therefore kept in one place instead of being maintained in separate lists.
How does license plate recognition help document truck loading?
License plate recognition identifies the truck at the gate, after which industrial cameras capture images of the load at the right moments. In the solution from TTS Automation and WAGO, cameras read the front and rear plates, assign the truck to its ERP order and direct it to the reserved ramp. Cameras on the ramp and on forklifts store an image of the secured load, and the timestamp and order number are burned into the image data.
What does digitalising a silo trailer achieve?
A digitalised silo trailer can be operated from one place and documents every loading operation automatically. In the Silo 4.0 project, Feldbinder and ifm combined all mechanical and pneumatic controls into one touch display with an integrated controller. A database stores customer data, product data and unloading parameters, while geofencing, code scanners and RFID prevent mix-ups. Drivers no longer have to walk around the vehicle, and unloading times become shorter.

Car
Fleet management with IoT automatically records the trips, locations and operating times of every car in a company fleet. Businesses no longer need handwritten logbooks, plan routes faster and keep a clean record of business and private trips.
Track infrastructure
Railway track maintenance becomes more targeted when IoT sensors on the track infrastructure supply weather data, axle counter diagnostics and loads from train operation. Operators avoid unnecessary line closures and plan work on tracks and switches more precisely.
Commercial vehicle
In a software defined vehicle, commercial vehicle software is rolled out and updated remotely rather than in the workshop. Manufacturers maintain one consistent software stack for the whole connected fleet, and an update no longer resembles a recall.
Delivery vehicle
Van telematics with a driver app connects every delivery vehicle to the dispatch office. Dispatchers see in real time which stops are done and warn customers of delays without calling the driver.
Freight wagon
Railcar tracking with IoT locates freight wagons that have no power supply of their own: self-powered trackers report position, movement, shocks and temperature throughout the journey. Dispatchers plan wagons better, customers receive arrival times, and maintenance follows actual use.
Semi-trailer
Trailer telematics makes every semi-trailer locatable and sends condition and maintenance data to the cloud. Silo trailers can also be controlled digitally, so drivers unload faster and more safely and loading operations are documented digitally.
