Freight wagon
Railcar tracking with IoT locates freight wagons that have no power supply of their own: self-powered trackers report position, movement, shocks and temperature throughout the journey. Dispatchers plan wagons better, customers receive arrival times, and maintenance follows actual use.

Rhätische Bahn tracks freight wagons with Rail Insight from A1 Digital

Telematics in rail freight transport: optimising operational processes and efficiently connecting wagon fleets even without power supply
Railcar tracking: locate freight wagons and know their condition
In the solution examples, A1 Digital equips the wagons with self-powered tracking devices. Motion and 3D acceleration sensors record position, track-related movement and shocks, and GPS coordinates are transmitted at fixed intervals. Freely definable geofencing detects when a wagon leaves a station or crosses a national border. M2M SIM cards with worldwide roaming send the data via the cellular network to the IoT platform, with an SMS fallback when there is no coverage. On the platform, limit values for temperature or impermissible shock loads can be set to trigger an alarm. For Rhätische Bahn, hosting runs on Exoscale, A1 Digital's European cloud.
Both examples come from rail freight. In its GVD-IoT project, Rhätische Bahn has equipped its 500 freight wagons and infrastructure vehicles and offers customers departure and arrival times as well as control over the cargo in transit. Rail Cargo Austria, the freight division of ÖBB, uses the data in its SmartCargo project to dispatch wagons more effectively, avoid downtime and carry out usage-based maintenance. Podcast episode #210 uses the digital freight train developed with Knorr-Bremse as an example of self-powered edge systems with solar cells and wagon-to-wagon radio for the digital brake test.

Railcar tracking: frequently asked questions
How do wagon keepers know when a freight wagon leaves a station?
With geofencing, the system automatically detects when a freight wagon enters or leaves a defined area. At Rail Cargo Austria, A1 Digital's telematics records when a wagon leaves a station or crosses a national border. The zones can be defined freely. Together with GPS coordinates, travel speed and starting speed, this gives dispatchers an overview of all active freight traffic.
How does rail freight tracking improve planning?
Tracking gives dispatchers live data on the position and condition of every wagon and thus the basis for reliable planning. Customers expect deliveries in line with demand and, ideally, continuous location of their goods. Rail Cargo Austria transports almost 100 million tonnes of goods through 18 countries each year and can dispatch wagons more effectively with the data from its SmartCargo project. At Rhätische Bahn, the solution makes freight planning more efficient.
How can a freight train go digital without a power supply?
A freight train can go digital without a power supply if the trackers and edge systems on its wagons are self-powered. A1 Digital extends battery life by transmitting smaller amounts of data and adapting the data streams. In podcast episode #210, Tobias Maier and Mirko Spitalny describe an edge system with solar cells and batteries for the digital freight train with Knorr-Bremse. A modular toolkit there also includes modules for energy harvesting.
How does IoT support railcar maintenance?
IoT enables usage-based, predictive maintenance because the movement and loads of every wagon are recorded continuously. Rail Cargo Austria uses the data from its SmartCargo devices for this, with the 3D acceleration sensor detecting shocks. At Rhätische Bahn, limit values for temperature or impermissible shock loads trigger an alarm. According to A1 Digital, the reliable data makes it possible to reduce maintenance and servicing costs.
More assets in “Means of Transport”
Car
Fleet management with IoT automatically records the trips, locations and operating times of every car in a company fleet. Businesses no longer need handwritten logbooks, plan routes faster and keep a clean record of business and private trips.
Truck
Truck tracking with IoT connects every truck to head office and delivers position, operating status and vehicle data in real time. Digital controls and documentation during loading and unloading also reduce manual entries for dispatchers, drivers and shippers.
Track infrastructure
Railway track maintenance becomes more targeted when IoT sensors on the track infrastructure supply weather data, axle counter diagnostics and loads from train operation. Operators avoid unnecessary line closures and plan work on tracks and switches more precisely.
Commercial vehicle
In a software defined vehicle, commercial vehicle software is rolled out and updated remotely rather than in the workshop. Manufacturers maintain one consistent software stack for the whole connected fleet, and an update no longer resembles a recall.
Delivery vehicle
Van telematics with a driver app connects every delivery vehicle to the dispatch office. Dispatchers see in real time which stops are done and warn customers of delays without calling the driver.
Semi-trailer
Trailer telematics makes every semi-trailer locatable and sends condition and maintenance data to the cloud. Silo trailers can also be controlled digitally, so drivers unload faster and more safely and loading operations are documented digitally.
