Track infrastructure

Railway track maintenance becomes more targeted when IoT sensors on the track infrastructure supply weather data, axle counter diagnostics and loads from train operation. Operators avoid unnecessary line closures and plan work on tracks and switches more precisely.

Railway track maintenance with IoT: rail data for targeted work

An Australian IoT provider takes measurements directly on the rails with its own sensors and delivers precise data to the rail operator every 15 minutes, later supplemented by rain gauges; it manages the devices via the Cumulocity platform. At Frauscher Sensortechnik, diagnostic data from the axle counters is sent in real time from the industrial PCs along the line via a local network to a central system developed by CDE Engineering. Trelleborg and optiMEAS use the ConeX3 system to measure loads and temperature in the bogie without contact; the smartRAIL IoT device transmits the key values via cellular network or Wi-Fi to optiCLOUD, and GPS assigns them to a location on the line.

The examples come from transport and logistics, as condition monitoring and early damage detection. A large Australian railway company now imposes speed restrictions during hot weather only where the track data requires them, saving 14,900 minutes of delays. Frauscher informs line operators early about possible sensor faults so that they can avoid unnecessary line closures. At Trelleborg, high loads at certain points on the line indicate irregularities or damage to the track. Podcast episodes 35 with optiMEAS and 57 with Frauscher and CDE Engineering explore both projects in more depth.

Railway track maintenance: frequently asked questions

How does rail temperature monitoring help operators prevent buckling?

Operators can prevent it by measuring conditions directly on the track instead of relying on weather stations that can be up to 100 kilometres away. Hot weather can deform rails and cause derailments. A large Australian railway company receives data every 15 minutes from an IoT provider's sensors and imposes local speed restrictions only where they are needed. This saved 14,900 minutes of delays.

How does a rail track monitoring system help avoid unnecessary line closures?

Unnecessary line closures can be avoided if faulty axle counters are detected and reset before the reset limit is reached. Extreme temperatures, moisture or vibration can occasionally produce incorrect counts, and after too many automatic resets the section is closed. Frauscher therefore transmits diagnostic data from its axle counters in real time to central monitoring, making service work easier to plan.

How does train data improve rail infrastructure maintenance?

Measurement data from the train shows where the line causes unusually high loads. Trelleborg's ConeX3 measuring system records all movements and deformations introduced into the bogie, and the smartRAIL device assigns them to a point on the line using GPS. High loads at certain points indicate irregularities or damage. With this information, maintenance work on tracks or switches can be planned more effectively.

Which values does track condition monitoring record?

Depending on the task, track condition monitoring records temperature, weather and diagnostic data from sensors along the line. The Australian provider measures temperature and humidity, among other values, and has also integrated rain gauges for the rail operator because heavy rain disrupts rail traffic as well. Frauscher axle counters provide diagnostic data on the health of the sensors themselves. New sensors could be integrated nationwide via Cumulocity within a few weeks.

Freight wagon

Railcar tracking with IoT locates freight wagons that have no power supply of their own: self-powered trackers report position, movement, shocks and temperature throughout the journey. Dispatchers plan wagons better, customers receive arrival times, and maintenance follows actual use.
