Transformer
Transformer monitoring with IoT measures the temperature directly on the transformer and reports hotspots before components in the control cabinet are damaged. Energy data also shows what role transformers play in a plant's consumption.

Transformer monitoring: hotspot temperatures and energy data
At ifm, a TS2229 surface temperature probe is mounted directly on the transformer. An evaluation unit (TP3231) converts the analogue signal into an IO-Link signal, and an IO-Link master such as the AL1350 feeds the values into the moneo IIoT platform every second. The probe is coupled to an operating hours counter that counts faster at high temperatures than at low ones. If a limit value is exceeded, moneo automatically sends an email to the person responsible. At plant level, the no-code platform from Itanta Analytics combines data from existing SCADA and PLC systems via an SQL connector and a Unified Namespace, and its dashboards show key figures for transformers and the power factor.
The examples come from technology and telecommunications as well as metal and electronics, as temperature measurement in condition monitoring and as energy monitoring. In the control cabinet, ifm monitors humidity, temperature and the 24 V supply alongside the transformer. A rolling bearing manufacturer in India used Itanta to modernise energy management at its Bangalore site: more than 80 energy meters now come together on one platform, including data from compressors, chillers, furnaces and transformers. Reports are generated automatically, and teams compare consumption across three daily shifts. After the first plant, the solution was rolled out to further sites.
Transformer monitoring: frequently asked questions
How does transformer temperature monitoring work?
A surface probe measures the temperature directly on the transformer, where hotspots develop. In the ifm solution, this is the TS2229, whose analogue signal is converted into an IO-Link signal by the TP3231 evaluation unit. Via an IO-Link master, the values reach the moneo platform every second. If a limit value is exceeded, moneo automatically sends an email to the employee responsible.
How does IoT support transformer maintenance?
IoT makes transformer maintenance condition-based because maintenance teams can see the operating state live. According to ifm, without monitoring, malfunctions are often detected late or only when a machine stops. In the ifm solution, the temperature probe on the transformer is coupled to an operating hours counter that counts at a faster rate at high temperatures and at a slower rate at low ones. The count therefore reflects thermal load, not just running time.
Why does transformer condition monitoring in control cabinets matter?
It matters because an overheating transformer is a hotspot that can damage components in the control cabinet and lead to operational failures. According to ifm, without continuous monitoring, malfunctions are often only detected when a machine stops. ifm therefore uses the LDH292 multisensor to measure temperature and humidity inside and outside the cabinet, so that ambient influences are taken into account, and also measures directly on the transformer. Limit values are defined using the data sheets of the installed devices.
How does power transformer monitoring work at plant level?
At plant level, transformer data becomes visible when an analytics platform combines existing meter data from SCADA and PLC systems. A rolling bearing manufacturer in Bangalore uses Itanta Analytics to bring together more than 80 energy meters, including compressors, chillers, furnaces, air handling units and transformers. The “Main Consumption Overview” dashboard shows consumption from grid power, a diesel generator and solar, along with key figures for the power factor and transformers. The platform was set up without any coding.

Filter
Filter monitoring with IoT measures the differential pressure across a filter and shows how dirty it is. Operators change filters when it is actually necessary, avoid clogged filters and downtime, and save energy and material.
Energy chain
An energy chain with IoT sensors continuously reports the condition of the cable management on moving machinery. Operators learn about overload, blockages or chain breakage before the machine stops, and plan chain replacement according to actual use.
Lighting
Commercial lighting control with IoT adjusts the lighting in offices, halls, shops and advertising installations according to occupancy, brightness and schedules, and monitors every luminaire remotely. Operators cut electricity consumption and learn about failures immediately.
Electricity meter
Automatic meter reading means that electricity meter readings reach a platform via radio, cellular network or pulse adapter, with no on-site reading. Operators bill more accurately and see where energy is consumed in a building or in production.
Charging station
Commercial EV charging relies on load management that distributes the available power across all charging stations at a site and monitors them remotely. Operators avoid overloading the grid connection, integrate photovoltaics and storage, and bill sessions automatically.
Piping network
Pipeline monitoring with IoT reports pressure drops, pressure peaks and moisture under insulation in a piping network before they turn into failures. Operators maintain pipes according to their condition and avoid inspection rounds to hard-to-reach measuring points.
