Commercial refrigerator monitoring: alerts before materials spoil
In the solution examples, each refrigerator has an IO-Link temperature sensor plus a sensor for the door status: an inductive sensor at ifm, a distance sensor at TURCK. The ifm io-key IoT gateway transmits the values via cellular (2G) or NB-IoT to a secure cloud, with no cabling to the IT infrastructure. The interval can be set freely, from every 10 seconds to once every 24 hours. Alarms for excessive temperature or a door left open too long go out immediately by email or SMS and appear on site as an acoustic and visual signal. TURCK collects the sensor data in a cabinet monitoring unit that sends it to the cloud via IO-Link and a switch.
The examples come from electronics manufacturing and commercial kitchens, as temperature measurement within condition monitoring and for audits and reporting. A manufacturer of automation technology uses the ifm solution to monitor the refrigerators in which it stores adhesives with a best-before date; staff only check when an alarm goes off. TURCK monitors solder paste storage in its own SMT production in Beierfeld, with MES integration and RFID tracking planned as next steps. Together with Materna, Hobart connects its professional kitchen equipment, including refrigerators and freezers, to a cloud application on Microsoft Azure.
Commercial refrigerator monitoring: frequently asked questions
How often should commercial refrigerator temperature be checked?
With IoT, fixed inspection rounds are no longer needed: sensors measure continuously, and in the ifm solution the transmission interval can be set freely, from every 10 seconds to once every 24 hours. Regardless of the interval, alarms for excessive temperature or a door left open too long arrive immediately by email or SMS. Staff only check the refrigerator when an alarm goes off, for example because of a door not closed properly, a wrong setting or a faulty compressor.
How is a HACCP temperature log created automatically?
The sensors transmit the temperature curve to the cloud automatically, so nobody has to read values on site and enter them in lists. In the ifm solution, the data appears in a dashboard in real time. A reporting function makes temperature curves traceable retrospectively and over long periods, for example when a quality problem turns up later. The solution example is assigned to the audits and reporting use case.
How does industrial refrigerator temperature monitoring work for adhesives or solder paste?
An industrial refrigerator for sensitive materials needs a temperature sensor and a sensor for the door status. ifm fits each refrigerator for industrial adhesives with an IO-Link temperature sensor and an inductive sensor. TURCK monitors the solder paste in its SMT production with temperature sensors, while distance sensors check that the doors are closed. For the closed paste containers, temperature is sufficient; in the printing process at 23 to 27 °C, TURCK also measures humidity.
How does restaurant fridge temperature monitoring work in commercial kitchens?
In commercial kitchens, refrigerators and freezers are connected to a cloud together with ovens and dishwashers. Together with Materna, Hobart transmits data from the factory-fitted sensors via a network gateway and the operator's Wi-Fi to an application on Microsoft Azure. Operators receive status data, automatic error messages with direct contact to a service partner and proof of compliance with hygiene regulations.

Filter
Filter monitoring with IoT measures the differential pressure across a filter and shows how dirty it is. Operators change filters when it is actually necessary, avoid clogged filters and downtime, and save energy and material.
Energy chain
An energy chain with IoT sensors continuously reports the condition of the cable management on moving machinery. Operators learn about overload, blockages or chain breakage before the machine stops, and plan chain replacement according to actual use.
Lighting
Commercial lighting control with IoT adjusts the lighting in offices, halls, shops and advertising installations according to occupancy, brightness and schedules, and monitors every luminaire remotely. Operators cut electricity consumption and learn about failures immediately.
Electricity meter
Automatic meter reading means that electricity meter readings reach a platform via radio, cellular network or pulse adapter, with no on-site reading. Operators bill more accurately and see where energy is consumed in a building or in production.
Charging station
Commercial EV charging relies on load management that distributes the available power across all charging stations at a site and monitors them remotely. Operators avoid overloading the grid connection, integrate photovoltaics and storage, and bill sessions automatically.
Piping network
Pipeline monitoring with IoT reports pressure drops, pressure peaks and moisture under insulation in a piping network before they turn into failures. Operators maintain pipes according to their condition and avoid inspection rounds to hard-to-reach measuring points.
