Control cabinet

Control cabinet monitoring with IoT sensors records the temperature, humidity, hotspots and power supply of the installed components. Operators detect faults before the machine comes to a standstill and carry out maintenance based on condition.

Control cabinet monitoring: detect failures early

In the solution examples, IO-Link multisensors such as ifm’s LDH292 measure temperature and relative humidity inside and outside the cabinet, a contact sensor on the transformer detects hotspots, and electronic circuit breakers with IO-Link monitor the circuits of the 24 V supply. The data is fed every second via an IO-Link master into the moneo IIoT platform, which sends an email when a limit is exceeded. TURCK’s IM18-CCM60 cabinet guard, running in.hub’s siineos operating system, records machine data, limit values and trends and sends alerts by email or text message. Doepke uses e.Guard to capture residual currents in short cycles and sends them to the cloud via a gateway based on the Revolution Pi.

The examples come from automation, mechanical and plant engineering, and technology and telecommunications, typically for condition monitoring, predictive maintenance and risk management. With Doepke’s e.Guard, users can dispense with the recurring insulation test under DIN VDE 0105-100/A1 and plan maintenance earlier with the help of machine learning. TURCK and in.hub offer the cabinet guard as a basis for monitoring entire machine fleets and production sites in a decentralised way. SCHOTTEL assessed the control system of its transverse thruster to IEC 62443 with WAGO Security Consulting, and the results are now with a classification society for certification.

Control cabinet monitoring: frequently asked questions

How does monitoring support control cabinet cooling?

Monitoring shows how warm and humid it actually is inside the control cabinet and thus provides the basis for optimising thermal management and the energy consumption of cooling. In ifm’s solution, one LDH292 IO-Link multisensor each measures temperature and relative humidity inside and outside the cabinet, so the influence of ambient temperature is also taken into account. Limit values are based on the data sheets of the installed devices.

What are the benefits of residual current monitoring in a control cabinet?

Residual current monitoring shows early on when faults or damage are developing in an electrical installation, for example due to wear or faulty connections. Doepke’s e.Guard captures residual currents in short cycles, so that load peaks and brief voltage dips during start-up are also detected. A gateway based on the Revolution Pi visualises and documents the curves. This allows users to dispense with the recurring insulation test under DIN VDE 0105-100/A1.

How are sensors in a control cabinet connected via IO-Link?

Sensors in the control cabinet are connected to an IO-Link master, which passes their values to the software via an IoT port. In ifm’s solution, multisensors for temperature and humidity, a temperature sensor on the transformer with an evaluation unit and electronic circuit breakers are connected to masters such as the AL1350. The values reach moneo every second. If a circuit breaker trips, the device status reports it and moneo notifies the people responsible by email.

What does IEC 62443 require of control cabinet automation?

IEC 62443 requires suppliers and integrators to assess the risks of an automation system jointly and derive protective measures from them. SCHOTTEL and WAGO followed IEC 62443-3-2: risk analysis, asset management from the control stand on the bridge to the local control stand at the control cabinet, division into zones, threat analysis and countermeasures. Finally, they defined test procedures to verify that these measures are effective.

Filter

Filter

Filter monitoring with IoT measures the differential pressure across a filter and shows how dirty it is. Operators change filters when it is actually necessary, avoid clogged filters and downtime, and save energy and material.

Energy chain

Energy chain

An energy chain with IoT sensors continuously reports the condition of the cable management on moving machinery. Operators learn about overload, blockages or chain breakage before the machine stops, and plan chain replacement according to actual use.

Lighting

Lighting

Commercial lighting control with IoT adjusts the lighting in offices, halls, shops and advertising installations according to occupancy, brightness and schedules, and monitors every luminaire remotely. Operators cut electricity consumption and learn about failures immediately.

Electricity meter

Electricity meter

Automatic meter reading means that electricity meter readings reach a platform via radio, cellular network or pulse adapter, with no on-site reading. Operators bill more accurately and see where energy is consumed in a building or in production.

Charging station

Charging station

Commercial EV charging relies on load management that distributes the available power across all charging stations at a site and monitors them remotely. Operators avoid overloading the grid connection, integrate photovoltaics and storage, and bill sessions automatically.

Piping network

Pipeline monitoring with IoT reports pressure drops, pressure peaks and moisture under insulation in a piping network before they turn into failures. Operators maintain pipes according to their condition and avoid inspection rounds to hard-to-reach measuring points.
