Circuit breaker
Industrial circuit breaker monitoring means that the control system reports immediately when a circuit breaker trips due to a short circuit or overload and shows which circuit is affected. Technicians can then resolve many faults remotely instead of on site.

Industrial circuit breaker monitoring: report trips, skip site visits
At ifm, electronic fuses with IO-Link protect the 24 V supply in the control cabinet. Up to eight fuse modules such as the DF2212 with a rated current of 2 A can be lined up on a DF2101 supply module, each with two channels, giving 16 circuits with a total current of 40 A. The modules continuously transmit their status via IO-Link, and an IO-Link master feeds the data into the moneo IIoT platform every second. If a channel trips, moneo automatically notifies the people responsible by email. On the module, a status LED shows green for fault-free operation and red for a trip, and the button switches the fuse straight back on.
The examples come from technology and telecommunications as well as mechanical engineering and agriculture, as condition monitoring and early damage detection. Rudolf Hörmann, a supplier of livestock housing and control systems for farms, installs the IXON IXrouter in its controllers and PV communication cabinets. If a scraper system fails because a motor protection switch has tripped, a quick look at the portal is now enough instead of a journey that often took hours. A router can be preconfigured with a USB stick in 5 minutes, compared with around 30 minutes for the former VPN configuration.
Industrial circuit breaker monitoring: frequently asked questions
What can be done when a motor starter trips at a remote site?
If the controller is connected, a technician can see a tripped motor protection switch in the portal without travelling to the site. Rudolf Hörmann connects its livestock and PV controllers to the web-based Hörmann Portal via the IXrouter and the IXON Cloud. If a scraper system fails because its motor protection switch has tripped, this can now be diagnosed remotely. This reduces costs, shortens response times and saves technicians many journeys.
How does control cabinet fuse monitoring report a trip?
An electronic fuse with IO-Link reports a trip via its device status. In the ifm solution, the moneo platform evaluates this status and automatically notifies the people responsible by email. On the fuse module itself, a red status LED shows which channel has tripped due to a short circuit or overload. This makes troubleshooting easier, and the button on the module switches the fuse straight back on.
How secure is remote access for industrial breaker status monitoring?
At Rudolf Hörmann, the level of security rose significantly with the cloud platform. The company previously used routers and on-premise servers with VPN systems that no longer met current security requirements and required considerable effort for certificate management. The new IXON-based system no longer requires sensitive certificates to be sent and automatically ensures clean network separation. Technicians access the systems through a secure VPN tunnel.
How many circuits can electronic fuse monitoring with IO-Link cover?
In the ifm solution, a single supply module monitors up to 16 circuits with a combined current of 40 A. Up to eight fuse modules, each with two channels, are lined up on the DF2101 supply module. The modules continuously transmit their current status via IO-Link, and an IO-Link master feeds the data into moneo every second. This keeps all channels of the 24 V supply in the control cabinet under constant observation.

Filter
Filter monitoring with IoT measures the differential pressure across a filter and shows how dirty it is. Operators change filters when it is actually necessary, avoid clogged filters and downtime, and save energy and material.
Energy chain
An energy chain with IoT sensors continuously reports the condition of the cable management on moving machinery. Operators learn about overload, blockages or chain breakage before the machine stops, and plan chain replacement according to actual use.
Lighting
Commercial lighting control with IoT adjusts the lighting in offices, halls, shops and advertising installations according to occupancy, brightness and schedules, and monitors every luminaire remotely. Operators cut electricity consumption and learn about failures immediately.
Electricity meter
Automatic meter reading means that electricity meter readings reach a platform via radio, cellular network or pulse adapter, with no on-site reading. Operators bill more accurately and see where energy is consumed in a building or in production.
Charging station
Commercial EV charging relies on load management that distributes the available power across all charging stations at a site and monitors them remotely. Operators avoid overloading the grid connection, integrate photovoltaics and storage, and bill sessions automatically.
Piping network
Pipeline monitoring with IoT reports pressure drops, pressure peaks and moisture under insulation in a piping network before they turn into failures. Operators maintain pipes according to their condition and avoid inspection rounds to hard-to-reach measuring points.
