Commercial battery storage: monitor, control and market capacity

In the solution examples, each storage unit reports its operating data to a platform. For a manufacturer of redox flow batteries, Novatec built an energy management platform on Microsoft Azure that controls and configures individual units as well as entire groups. PRAMAC’s EV-Boost Box combines 130 kWh of battery storage, an integrated battery management system, an inverter and energy management in one container. For the digital battery passport, HK.DIGITAL’s Battery.live provides static information and live data according to DIN DKE SPEC 99100, such as capacity, degradation, charging cycles and temperature, accessible via QR code or NFC. Rhebo IIoT Security monitors communication directly on the storage controller using deep packet inspection.

The examples come mainly from the energy and electronics industries, typically for peak load management, backup power scenarios and charging management. In Pfullingen, PRAMAC Storage Systems uses the EV-Boost Box to supply two charging stations with four charging points for its electric company fleet, supported by a PV tracker. Novatec’s customer markets the capacity of its own and third-party batteries in an energy-as-a-service model. At sonnen GmbH, Rhebo now protects more than 50,000 energy storage systems against cyber attacks.

Commercial battery storage: frequently asked questions

How does peak shaving with battery storage work?

With peak shaving, the battery covers consumption peaks from its stored energy so that the power drawn from the grid stays below a set limit. PRAMAC’s EV-Boost Box supplies additional power for the charging stations of the company fleet during demand peaks and stores electricity from photovoltaics. The platform Novatec developed for a storage manufacturer also lists peak shaving as a central use case, alongside self-consumption optimisation.

What data does a connected battery storage system provide about its condition?

Besides its state of charge, a connected battery storage system mainly provides data on ageing and stress. As live data according to DIN DKE SPEC 99100, the Battery.live passport lists capacity and degradation, battery resistance, charging cycles, deep discharge and overcharge events, temperature and the state of charge, among other values. On platforms such as the one built by Novatec, operators use this data to control individual units and entire groups, maximising service life and reducing operating costs.

What does the digital battery passport contain?

The digital battery passport brings together the relevant data on a battery’s origin, composition and recyclability, as required by EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542. HK.DIGITAL’s Battery.live adds live operating data to static information such as manufacturer, carbon footprint, battery chemistry and spare parts. Users access it via QR code or NFC on a smartphone without installing any software first. The basic application is available free of charge under the Apache 2.0 open-source licence.

How can commercial energy storage be operated profitably?

Commercial energy storage is more likely to pay off when it performs several tasks: shaving load peaks, increasing self-consumption and offering capacity on the electricity market. The platform Novatec built on Microsoft Azure for a manufacturer of redox flow batteries is designed for capacity trading and marketing via direct marketers. The manufacturer uses it to manage batteries at different sites centrally and to market their capacity as energy as a service.

Filter

Filter

Filter monitoring with IoT measures the differential pressure across a filter and shows how dirty it is. Operators change filters when it is actually necessary, avoid clogged filters and downtime, and save energy and material.

Energy chain

Energy chain

An energy chain with IoT sensors continuously reports the condition of the cable management on moving machinery. Operators learn about overload, blockages or chain breakage before the machine stops, and plan chain replacement according to actual use.

Lighting

Lighting

Commercial lighting control with IoT adjusts the lighting in offices, halls, shops and advertising installations according to occupancy, brightness and schedules, and monitors every luminaire remotely. Operators cut electricity consumption and learn about failures immediately.

Electricity meter

Electricity meter

Automatic meter reading means that electricity meter readings reach a platform via radio, cellular network or pulse adapter, with no on-site reading. Operators bill more accurately and see where energy is consumed in a building or in production.

Charging station

Charging station

Commercial EV charging relies on load management that distributes the available power across all charging stations at a site and monitors them remotely. Operators avoid overloading the grid connection, integrate photovoltaics and storage, and bill sessions automatically.

Piping network

Piping network

Pipeline monitoring with IoT reports pressure drops, pressure peaks and moisture under insulation in a piping network before they turn into failures. Operators maintain pipes according to their condition and avoid inspection rounds to hard-to-reach measuring points.
