Well

Borehole monitoring with IoT transmits the water level of a well continuously to a platform, even from remote sites without a network. Operators spot critical water levels in time, secure their supply and avoid inspection trips.

Borehole and well monitoring: track water levels remotely

At Kögelhof, a continuous ifm LR3020 level sensor with probe rod and coupling plate measures the water level in the well tank. The io-key transmits the values via cellular network directly to the moneo software, independently of existing IT. Power comes from a small photovoltaic module and a battery. In moneo, dashboards show the level and the available volume and report when a limit is undercut. In Oberzent, levels, flows and pressures travel via a LoRaWAN network and WAGO gateways into the Netilion IIoT ecosystem from Endress+Hauser.

The examples come from agriculture and from energy and environment. Farm manager Hermann Müller supplies the farm and the biogas plant at Kögelhof in Mochenwangen from a spring a few hundred metres away. At critical levels he receives a notification so he can save water or switch to the municipal supply. In Oberzent in the Odenwald, water master Thomas Pirk and three colleagues look after seven springs, two deep wells and 18 elevated reservoirs. Instead of driving to each measuring point, they now see the data from 19 stations in dashboards and in the report formats required by the authorities.

Borehole monitoring: frequently asked questions

How does agricultural well monitoring measure the water level?

A continuous level sensor measures the water level in the well and passes it to software on an ongoing basis. At Kögelhof, this is the ifm LR3020 sensor, combined with the E43380 coupling plate and a two-metre E43353 probe rod. In moneo, the available water volume is also calculated from this, but only when the level changes. The values can be viewed from anywhere.

How does farm water supply monitoring secure a farm's own well?

IoT reports the well's water level continuously and warns before it becomes critical. At Kögelhof in Mochenwangen, the farm, the biogas plant and the household depend on a spring a few hundred metres away. The ifm io-key transmits the values via cellular network to moneo, with power from a photovoltaic module and a battery. At critical levels, the farm manager can save water or switch to the municipal supply.

How does well field monitoring work without mobile reception?

Via a LoRaWAN network that bridges long distances with little energy. In Oberzent, the energy supplier Entega built such a network because most sites have no mobile reception. Endress+Hauser integrated the 19 stations into Netilion, and WAGO gateways process the signals from different measuring devices. Status messages from the devices also show which measuring points need maintenance.

How does water abstraction monitoring help utilities report on their wells?

IoT records levels and abstractions automatically and provides them in the formats the authorities require. In Oberzent, water abstractions must be logged and submitted to the regional council. Previously, four water masters drove to the sites and entered the values from flow, level and pressure devices into lists by hand. Today, Netilion produces logs and evidence and reports anomalies by alarm.

Transport container

Transport container

Shipment monitoring with IoT reports where a transport container is and whether anyone opens it without authorisation. For valuable or sensitive goods, the system raises an alarm immediately instead of a theft only being noticed by the recipient.

Load carrier

Load carrier

An RTLS locates load carriers such as mesh boxes, pallets and bins across halls and plants in real time. Companies cut search times, replace accompanying paperwork and manual scanning, and trigger bookings and transports automatically.

Pallet

Pallet

Pallet tracking with IoT shows where every pallet is, what is on it and how much stock remains. Sensors, RFID and wireless networks replace search trips, manual scanning and stocktaking counts with a forklift.

Process vessel

Process vessel

Process monitoring with IoT continuously records level, temperature, humidity and other parameters in a process vessel. Without inspection rounds, operators know when to refill or empty it and whether the contents are still usable.

Collection container

Collection container

Waste container monitoring connects collection containers and waste locks so that they report fill levels and emptying events in real time. Operators see which containers are full, plan collections accordingly and bill by actual use.

Container

Container tracking software with IoT shows where a container is and its status, whether an air freight container, a container in a construction fleet or a unit shipped worldwide. Companies save search time and plan storage more precisely.
