Transport container

Shipment monitoring with IoT reports where a transport container is and whether anyone opens it without authorisation. For valuable or sensitive goods, the system raises an alarm immediately instead of a theft only being noticed by the recipient.

Shipment monitoring for transport boxes: location and tampering

In the solution examples, GPS trackers sit in transport boxes and trolleys and send their position via the cellular network to an IoT platform. With A1 Digital, a magnetic contact between box and lid detects every opening and closing, and an unauthorised opening triggers an email or text message to defined contacts. The Arkuri Safe Case is lined with a conductive foil and reports tampering via NB-IoT or LTE-M. Location tracking only starts when an event occurs, which saves battery power. ALSO's Dolly+ trolley is locked electronically and opened with a PIN, and optional sensors measure shocks, humidity, temperature, tilt and movement. Within plants, SICK locates transport trolleys via ultra-wideband to within one metre and reports goods receipt and goods issue to the SAP Logistics Business Network.

The examples come from retail, technology, consumer goods and manufacturing, mainly for object tracking and real-time damage prevention. Jewellery retailer Feichtinger monitors its transport boxes with A1 Digital without gaps from dispatch to return, after parcels had arrived empty. Cyberport tested the Dolly+ in a pilot project for deliveries to its stores, with no loss of goods. With SmaRTLog, SICK reduced lead time by 20 per cent and the search time for missing materials from 45 to 15 minutes.

Shipment monitoring: frequently asked questions

What does shipment monitoring add to standard tracking?

Shipment monitoring with IoT reports not only the route but also the condition of the container, such as whether it has been opened. For jewellery retailer Feichtinger, the logistics partner's tracking number was not enough, because parcels arrived empty but closed again. A1 Digital therefore equipped the transport boxes with trackers that record position as well as opening and closing. An unauthorised opening triggers an alarm in real time.

Is a GPS tracker enough for cargo theft prevention?

A GPS tracker alone is often not enough, because a theft is only noticed once the container leaves its expected route. That was Feichtinger's experience in the first step of its proof of concept with A1 Digital. Only sensors that detect opening, combined with real-time alerts over the cellular network, delivered the protection it needed. This requires trackers with enough battery life to cover the entire journey.

How does tamper detection work in a connected security case?

A connected security case detects tampering via sensors and a conductive lining and reports every break-in attempt over the mobile network. ZippIT's Arkuri Safe Case is lined with a conductive foil and has several sensors in the lid. Every tampering attempt is reported to the app via NB-IoT or LTE-M. Together with A1 Digital, connectivity was designed so that location tracking only starts when an event occurs.

How does material flow tracking affect overall equipment effectiveness?

When material between warehouse and production can be found at any time, lines stop less often and overall equipment effectiveness rises. In its own plants, SICK used SmaRTLog to locate materials and transport trolleys via ultra-wideband and linked the system to SAP. Search time for missing materials fell from 45 to 15 minutes, and lead time dropped by 20 per cent. Overall equipment effectiveness rose by ten to 20 per cent after introduction.

Load carrier

Load carrier

An RTLS locates load carriers such as mesh boxes, pallets and bins across halls and plants in real time. Companies cut search times, replace accompanying paperwork and manual scanning, and trigger bookings and transports automatically.

Pallet

Pallet

Pallet tracking with IoT shows where every pallet is, what is on it and how much stock remains. Sensors, RFID and wireless networks replace search trips, manual scanning and stocktaking counts with a forklift.

Process vessel

Process vessel

Process monitoring with IoT continuously records level, temperature, humidity and other parameters in a process vessel. Without inspection rounds, operators know when to refill or empty it and whether the contents are still usable.

Collection container

Collection container

Waste container monitoring connects collection containers and waste locks so that they report fill levels and emptying events in real time. Operators see which containers are full, plan collections accordingly and bill by actual use.

Fuel tank

An IoT fuel tank monitoring system reports the level of a plant's diesel tank, emergency fuel reserves or a construction dryer's fuel tank continuously and remotely. Operators plan refills on real values and detect theft or leaks early.
