Indoor air

Indoor air quality monitoring with IoT means sensors continuously record CO₂, fine dust, particles, temperature and humidity and report limit violations immediately. Operators protect employees, safeguard product quality and heat and ventilate according to demand.

Indoor air quality monitoring for offices and production

In the solution examples, Sentinum's battery-powered Febris sensor measures CO₂ in ppm, temperature and humidity, optionally also volatile organic compounds, and transmits via NB-IoT using a 1NCE eSIM to the cloud. At CURRENTA, eight connected sensors send CO₂, temperature and fine dust readings via LoRaWAN to a central dashboard. The in.hub pSYS particle measurement system uses up to five particle sensors plus temperature and humidity sensors and sends alerts by email or text message. TURCK monitors temperature and humidity in its circuit board production via IO-Link, and the BlueKit Lift Vision box from D+H and Telekom measures temperatures and air flow in lift shafts over the cellular network.

The examples come from utilities, automotive suppliers, electronics manufacturing and real estate, typically for hazard detection, particle measurement and energy management. In a 300 m² CURRENTA office building, 16 heating actuators regulate according to temperature, occupancy and time profiles, and room temperature dropped from 23 to 24 °C to 20 °C. Using pSYS, the Dr. Schneider Group measured hotspots and fine dust in its paint shop for the first time and reduced rejects and rework caused by particle inclusions. Merck Real Estate analyses occupancy, temperature and indoor CO₂ levels on the CREM SOLUTIONS platform, saving energy and rental costs.

Indoor air quality monitoring: frequently asked questions

How can indoor air quality be monitored continuously at work?

Indoor air quality can be monitored continuously with connected sensors that send their readings by radio to a platform. Depending on requirements, they measure CO₂, fine dust, particles, temperature and humidity. Battery-powered devices with NB-IoT or LoRaWAN need neither cabling nor a local network. When a limit value is exceeded, warnings go to the responsible staff via app, email or text message, and the data also serves as documentation.

Why is CO₂ a good indicator of workplace air quality?

CO₂ concentration reliably shows how stale the air in a room is. The German Environment Agency considers it the best indicator of exposure to bioaerosols. Outdoor air contains around 400 ppm, and the German labour ministry recommended staying well below 1,000 ppm. Sentinum's Febris sensor displays the value in traffic light colours, warns with a buzzer and sends the data via NB-IoT to the cloud, for example to facility management.

What does real-time dust monitoring achieve in production?

Real-time dust monitoring shows where and when dust is generated instead of only delivering past spot checks. The Dr. Schneider Group had high reject and rework rates caused by particle inclusions in the paint. With the in.hub pSYS system, hotspots and fine dust levels in the plant became measurable for the first time. The company identified the effect of different paint systems, adjusted its process steps and significantly reduced rejects and rework.

How does IoT improve office air quality while saving energy?

IoT improves the indoor climate by using sensors to measure temperature, CO₂ and fine dust and aligning heating and ventilation with the readings. In a CURRENTA office building, the heating used to run constantly at 22 to 24 °C regardless of weather or occupancy. After retrofitting 16 actuators and eight air quality sensors, the temperature is now 20 °C, and the data shows when rooms should be aired.

Compressed air

Compressed air

Compressed air leak detection with IoT continuously measures flow, pressure and compressor load, revealing leaks and unused running times. This cuts the cost of one of the most expensive forms of energy in manufacturing.

Drinking water

Drinking water

Water network leak detection for drinking water continuously measures pressure, flow and consumption with IoT and reports deviations immediately. Utilities find leaks, pipe bursts and water theft sooner and lose less drinking water.

Groundwater

Groundwater

Groundwater monitoring with IoT measures levels automatically and transmits them by radio to a platform. Authorities, utilities, construction sites and businesses with their own well replace manual measurements and are alerted to critical water levels or pump faults.

Wastewater

Wastewater

Wastewater flow measurement, levels and water quality can be recorded with IoT directly at pipes, basins and discharge points. Operators see wastewater volumes in real time, respond faster to faults and meet reporting obligations without daily sampling.

Molten metal

Molten metal

In foundry melting and vacuum metallurgy, IoT continuously records the melt pool, fill level, temperature and pressure of molten metal. Deviations show up before a batch becomes unusable or a furnace runs empty.

Beer

Beer

In a commercial brewery, IoT sensors measure the density, temperature and material properties of the beer directly in production. Breweries see values such as sugar and alcohol in real time instead of drawing samples and waiting for the lab.
