Groundwater
Groundwater monitoring with IoT measures levels automatically and transmits them by radio to a platform. Authorities, utilities, construction sites and businesses with their own well replace manual measurements and are alerted to critical water levels or pump faults.

Groundwater monitoring: measure levels automatically and remotely
At the Kögelhof farm's well, an ifm LR3020 IO-Link level sensor measures the water level, and the io-key transmits the values via cellular network to the moneo platform, powered by a small solar module and a battery. At the Port of Antwerp, automatic measurement of the groundwater table is one of the applications on the AllThingsTalk IoT platform, connected via NB-IoT and LoRaWAN. Stadtwerke Krefeld brings the data from its level sensors together on the ThingsBoard IoT platform. On construction sites, an IP54-rated control cabinet with a touch display and cellular module monitors Hüdig's groundwater lowering units and reports faults by email or text message.
The examples come from energy and environment, public administration, construction, logistics and agriculture, as groundwater level measurement within condition monitoring or for early damage detection. For the Düsseldorf district government, Stadtwerke Krefeld is installing 450 sensors to replace manual groundwater level measurements and to measure hourly in future. Manufacturer Hüdig works with TURCK to offer remote monitoring of its groundwater lowering units, so site managers can see the status and the volume of water pumped at any time. The Kögelhof farm in Mochenwangen is notified automatically when the water level in its well becomes critical.

Groundwater monitoring: frequently asked questions
How does automatic groundwater monitoring work?
A sensor measures the water level continuously and sends the values by radio or cellular network to an IoT platform. At the Port of Antwerp, groundwater table measurement runs over NB-IoT and LoRaWAN, networks that have proven themselves over long distances outdoors. Limit values are stored in the platform, and a notification is sent when a level falls below them. At the Kögelhof farm's well, a level sensor with ifm's io-key cellular gateway is all it takes.
What are the benefits of automated groundwater monitoring wells?
Automated measurements replace manual readings at monitoring wells and deliver values at much shorter intervals. Stadtwerke Krefeld monitors groundwater levels for the Düsseldorf district government and is currently installing 450 sensors for this purpose. In future, measurements will be taken every hour. The data flows into the ThingsBoard IoT platform, which the utility runs itself and also uses for its district heating network and for its business customers' energy management.
How is construction dewatering monitored remotely?
A controller on the unit records operating data and faults and sends them to the cloud via cellular network. At Hüdig, the electronics sit in an IP54-rated control cabinet with a touch display, SIM card and cellular module. Site managers and foremen receive alarms by email or text message and can step in before water enters the excavation. The volumes of water pumped are documented at the same time, so external measuring devices are no longer needed.
How is groundwater level monitoring done on port and industrial sites?
On large sites, sensors measure the groundwater level automatically and send the readings via radio networks to a platform. At the Port of Antwerp, automatic groundwater level measurement is one of the applications of the AllThingsTalk IoT platform that ALSO built for the port authority. It uses Narrowband IoT and LoRaWAN, which have proven themselves over long distances outdoors. Across more than 152 square kilometres of port area, the same platform also reports missing lifebuoys.

Compressed air
Compressed air leak detection with IoT continuously measures flow, pressure and compressor load, revealing leaks and unused running times. This cuts the cost of one of the most expensive forms of energy in manufacturing.
Indoor air
Indoor air quality monitoring with IoT means sensors continuously record CO₂, fine dust, particles, temperature and humidity and report limit violations immediately. Operators protect employees, safeguard product quality and heat and ventilate according to demand.
Drinking water
Water network leak detection for drinking water continuously measures pressure, flow and consumption with IoT and reports deviations immediately. Utilities find leaks, pipe bursts and water theft sooner and lose less drinking water.
Wastewater
Wastewater flow measurement, levels and water quality can be recorded with IoT directly at pipes, basins and discharge points. Operators see wastewater volumes in real time, respond faster to faults and meet reporting obligations without daily sampling.
Molten metal
In foundry melting and vacuum metallurgy, IoT continuously records the melt pool, fill level, temperature and pressure of molten metal. Deviations show up before a batch becomes unusable or a furnace runs empty.
Beer
In a commercial brewery, IoT sensors measure the density, temperature and material properties of the beer directly in production. Breweries see values such as sugar and alcohol in real time instead of drawing samples and waiting for the lab.
